nice one. i like the paint to the black of the rest. small frame i see.
if you’d like to hear “love or hate” as stated in your description i would say “love all of the bike except the red ring of the tires.” ^^
April 17th, 2010 @2:30 am
is that your ride luft?
nice build. only thing that i would change is the saddle…but i bet its very comfy.
how much did the pake crank cost you?
love
April 17th, 2010 @3:49 am
nice work love the color
April 17th, 2010 @3:54 am
Hahahahaha… Not feeling this bike at all! Better luck on your 3rd build…kinda looks like you converted a mountain bike frame.. Haha..
April 17th, 2010 @4:00 am
Very disappointed, I mean nice try for your pride and joy, but with all the hype and going back and forth with others about this bike being the best ride and better than what they can build, the only way it can be better than their builds is if they don’t build bikes at all. I think your Raleigh is better than this, sad to say, but hey at least you tried, we all tend to fail one way or another, but in your case you failed twice, AFTER talking mad crap to everyone else. I hope you go down to Media, PA, where you “aparently” build better bikes than gabe, and buy one of
his bikes, because this is atrocious. Ok I’m done for now
April 17th, 2010 @5:28 am
Caseswitch: I’ll switch to black gatorskins when these tires are done.
Daniel: saddle was free taken from Raleigh SGP. Very
comfortable. I’ll get a NOS in a year or so. Concor hopefully.
DeepV: nice one!! Where’s your bike? I wanna see it.
Thanks guys.
April 17th, 2010 @5:30 am
Daniel: crank was around $65.
April 17th, 2010 @5:49 am
The Tank would look right at home on an Army base. I’m leaning toward your Raleigh Gran Prix since I’m old school lover of steel and chrome. Nice colors on your bike/looks good.
April 17th, 2010 @6:05 am
I wouldn’t change a thing except:
I would put a white rim on the front,
an orange deep v on the rear,
orange one piece cranks, orange chain,
drop bars with blue tape at an odd angle,
a blue front tire and an all black rear,
and I would get a new frame.
I would also rattle-can it white, and paint the forks white and dip the ends ever so gently in heavenly orange.
I would leave the seat.
If I couldn’t have all of those changes, then I guess I would still like this one.
If I did make those subtle changes I suppose I would want it back the way it was rather quickly.
April 17th, 2010 @6:10 am
WELCOME back Scozzy !
April 17th, 2010 @6:16 am
@scozzy, LOL. That train wreck sounds hilarious.
Nice bike. Very minimal which I always like. I’m kind of surprised you’re running a front brake on a non machined wheel. Yeah, you must have a lot of hills around with that gear ratio. Overall, its a pretty good looking bike.
April 17th, 2010 @6:18 am
http://www.myfixedgear.net/cheap-but-bling
This is kinda what I am dreaming of.
April 17th, 2010 @6:19 am
@scozzy again, LOL!!!
April 17th, 2010 @6:23 am
Scozzy: minor changes indeed
CS: they’re anodized so it feels just like machined. And yes the hills are pretty intense even with 42-17.
Cheers fellas.
April 17th, 2010 @6:40 am
Nice work Luftie. Kinda what I expected- clean build, front brake. Tidy overall.
Enjoy
April 17th, 2010 @9:29 am
Love the color scheme. And I think it’ll actually look even better with the rust colored mesh sidewall on gators. Dig the wrapped risers. Damn Luft…3 years. Congrats.
April 17th, 2010 @9:52 am
Thanks ng. The armadillos look way redder and brighter than they really are. They’re quite brick colored but I agree about the gators, they should look good. I might just get one but I’m not sure if that’ll look weird, because $90 is a lot to throw down on a set of tires and I was hesistant about getting both armadillos. Then again I could just switch the front and back when the back gets burnt out. That’s what I need to do soon wth the arms.
April 17th, 2010 @10:47 am
is that a bullet valve cap? goes along well with the army colors and name.
April 17th, 2010 @11:40 am
Affirmative.
April 17th, 2010 @12:32 pm
Luft, Don’t know how much skidding you do…but my gators have lasted a lonnng time with a decent amount of skidding. Going on a year and still strong. I think the rubber is some kind of carbon/rubber compound. Best tires I’ve used so far.
April 17th, 2010 @1:03 pm
I gotta like it. It’s GREEN! Well done Luftie. It is a tidy piece of work. I get the name and the bullet caps. Nice touches. So glad it hasn’t got white rims. The boy done good. Maybe someday one of mine will look this well thought out.
April 17th, 2010 @2:29 pm
Luft,I stand humbled.Excellent build!Love the matched rims and tires.enjoy
April 17th, 2010 @6:30 pm
Thanks guys. It means a lot.
ng: I’ve only had my armadillos one season and the rear tire has lost it’s tread. As far as how often I skid, the appropriate question would be how often don’t I? I like top speeds, wobble skids, and of course the timeless drifting around corners. I was thinking of trying some action shots.
Cheers.
April 17th, 2010 @8:48 pm
Skidding’s so much fun. I know it may be a stretch but sometimes when you’re going down a steep hill, throwing skids left and right it’s reminiscent of snowboarding.
April 17th, 2010 @8:57 pm
talking about skidding, i recently changed out my friend’s tire+tube. Turns out, he skid so much, he skidded through the tire and on the tube. POOF!
April 17th, 2010 @9:02 pm
Wes, maybe the gearing only gives him minimal tire skid areas. Sheldon Brown talks about this on his site. Some combos yield more areas for the tire when locking up.
April 17th, 2010 @9:03 pm
That’s awesome!! Definitely got his moneys worth. I’ll have to try that ng, depending on the steepness.
April 17th, 2010 @9:22 pm
Wooden, it’s not that. His whole tire was pretty much threaded. One long heavy skid could have made a hole anywhere.
April 17th, 2010 @11:31 pm
WSB has a point, though. I remember reading that and deciding an odd number (ie 42-17) sounded better than 42-16. “Simplify your gear ratio to the smallest whole number ratio. The denominator of the resulting fraction is the number of skid patches you will have on your rear tire.” Meaning 42-16 reduces to 21-8, and there are 8 patches. But 42-17 doesn’t reduce because it’s odd and thus there are 17 skid patches, which allows for more even tire wear when skidding is concerned. So Wes’ pal probably ran an even ratio and had fewer patches, resulting in more wear in fewer places. Or he just rode the piss out of it and it was purely coincidence the tire only broke through in that area. What in saying is, Sheldon Brown rocks. Cheers.
April 18th, 2010 @9:04 am
um, i think you’re right luft. He rode the piss outta it.
April 18th, 2010 @6:14 pm
5.67? People just don’t recognize awesomeness when they see it. But it is a newer style and i myself am prone to vintage frames. Cheers.
April 18th, 2010 @6:39 pm
i think people don’t get compact geometry. this frame reminds me of a brooklyn mach. works gangsta track which i love theres one on here and it was rated about the same. this sites just kinda old school i guess.
April 18th, 2010 @6:39 pm
i think people don’t get compact geometry. this frame reminds me of a brooklyn mach. works gangsta track which i love theres one on here and it was rated about the same. this sites just kinda old school i guess.
April 18th, 2010 @7:02 pm
Yeah the sloping top tube is definitely a love it or hate it feature. But I think it’s unique, and it sure is easy to dismount, especially with my seatpost a foot high. It’s cool, though. Because I like it either way. And DeepV is a moron if he actually thought this was a converted MTB.
April 19th, 2010 @4:28 am
There you go again calling people names! Wow! You must be like 16-22 kid.. I stated my option & said it “looks” like a mtb frame not that it was… You have allot to learn youngster! Cheers!
April 19th, 2010 @5:11 am
Professor Luftmensh, You have to build at least 10 bikes before you can criticize another person’s bike. You have one, below average bike on this site so far, this one doesn’t count. You got 9 more to go. This bike is absolutely horrendous, I am struggling to find words to describe this monstrocity. Get a glass of milk and cookies from your mother, go to your room and start thinking about your next build. You cannot comment on any other bike, it is prohibited for you, just remember, “cuz I ain’t bluffin”.….. NG, “Skiddin’s so much fun!@#$%^. Now I get it, you are all 16 years old little punks and in High School. This site is for adults, find someplace else to destroy, do not make comments no more, leave this site immediately.
April 19th, 2010 @6:10 am
Oh man, here comes another troll war.
April 19th, 2010 @6:24 am
How many rounds Gentlemen ? No punching below the Top Tube !
April 19th, 2010 @7:49 am
John Thompson…Actually I’m 35. And yes skidding is fun. Maybe you should try it. But be careful…it does take some skill. Wouldn’t want you to fall down and get hurt. I find it enjoyable to do the kind of riding on my fixed that I can’t on my others. Part of the pleasure of riding a bike, or different bikes John is utilizing them to their fullest capacity.
Oh and hey John, you’re kind of annoying. Until you tell us which bike is yours or at least stop crying all the time we’re gonna have to give you a “time out”.
April 19th, 2010 @9:33 am
Luft, nice set up.
John, you have some major issues, maybe you should talk to someone who can help.
April 19th, 2010 @10:25 am
john boy, pony up.what bike’syours.enquiring minds want to know.
April 19th, 2010 @10:42 am
Yeah John I could really care less what you say. Either post your bike or get back to Matlock. Cheers.
April 19th, 2010 @10:51 am
Sorry DeepV. When you comment purely for the sake of being a dick I can’t find it in my heart to give you the benefit of the doubt. At least when I “bash” on someone’s bike I tell them what I do or don’t like about it. And the same goes for you as for John, either post your bike or zip it. “Hahahaha” —-and you say I’m the 16-22 year old? You guys need help.
April 19th, 2010 @11:04 am
Yes,I pretty much said your bike looks like shit for my liking.. Now didn’t you Share your lame options before posting your bikes? So why can’t I share my option now?!? You think your badass because you posted two ugly bike and everyone here is hanging on your nuts.. One star bitch!
April 19th, 2010 @12:23 pm
I at least mention the fact that I actually own a bike, am familiar with components, and have the balls to post it when I know jerks like you will hate on it purely for the sport. And I never self-proclaimed I was a badass. I have a strong opinion and share it honestly with others at the expense of being criticized myself, especially after building “such a reputation.”
I’m fine with you sharing your OPINION (learn to spell, please, it’s unbecoming of someone trying to be insulting) but hating without constructive criticism is unwelcome and unintelligent. I employ satire, a severe but constructive and often ridiculous criticism, so the rider can at least see why I’m frustrated. But you my friend, and John, have blatant hate for hate sake. It’s called transference. So run along, I’ve got better things to do than deal with your little tantrums.
April 19th, 2010 @1:26 pm
Take that!! I don’t know Luft… You used a few big words there. They’ll probably need a dictionary before attempting to respond.
April 19th, 2010 @1:56 pm
T.K.O to Lightning Luftie. Huzzah!
April 19th, 2010 @2:56 pm
Luftie, King of Satire . and yes I had to look it up to be sure of its usage. I have a Dictionary next to the Laptop. (Or should I use a Dick Shun Airy ) End of round 2
April 19th, 2010 @3:06 pm
In the break between rounds,,,some poetry.
There’s holes in the sky where the rain gets in.
They are ever so small. That’s why rain’s thin.
Thanks to Spike Milligan for that metrological observation.
Seconds out,, Time for round trois.
April 19th, 2010 @3:09 pm
I think it is a cyclical (ha ha) thing around here. Every so often we get these guys who go nuts on everyone. They always end up ticking off the smart people who just waste them in the arena of words.
CS, what was that guys name that I used to fight with? His comeback always had to do with my parents being gay or some such moronic insult that never really worked.
WSB: shouldn’t it be a dick’s un-hairy? or if you are directing a porn shoot: “OK guys all dicks on Mary”.
OK, I’ll stop.
April 19th, 2010 @3:25 pm
Nice one Scozzy. I like all the word play here. How about lesbians prefer shaved girlfriends? Dykes shun hairy. That’s bad on so many fronts.
April 19th, 2010 @3:29 pm
scozzy was it Newcastle the old hassle ?
April 19th, 2010 @3:40 pm
You mean newcasstle? Yeah they’re version 2.0, or like the T1000 Terminators, getting better at what they do, hurling unfounded insults like chain fed machine guns. But everyone knows John Connor always wins in the end.
April 19th, 2010 @3:47 pm
Newasstle, that’s the ticket.
WSB: good one.
Flint: he he.
April 19th, 2010 @3:47 pm
J.T will have to change his surname to Conner to stand a chance then. Any one seen his bike yet?
April 19th, 2010 @3:55 pm
Ah newcastle. I almost miss him/her/it in a way. Nothing gets your frustrations out than helping an idiot make a full of himself online. That kid had issues. I’m sure he did what I thought he’d do and moved onto the next trend.
April 19th, 2010 @4:09 pm
I’m here to make an idiot of myself, and enjoy it. There is much I know, but even more I don’t. You can tell the teenagers. They ALWAYS know it all. Ha,ha.And are SO serious. TWATS. X
April 19th, 2010 @7:06 pm
I think you would like a Brooks dark brown leather saddle on this, or at least I would. My gel saddle was hot and uncomfortable.
April 19th, 2010 @7:42 pm
I don’t miss newcastle. And no I haven’t seen Thompson’s bike, or DeepV’s (who for some reason isn’t impressed with b43s, ironically enough).
April 19th, 2010 @7:47 pm
Brooks would be nice but it could be a stretch for my urban look. And they’re pricey, way more than even a Concor.
April 21st, 2010 @12:12 pm
eh!!!: atrocious, huh? what’s yours if mine’s so bad?
all you haters say this bike sucks and yet you never say specifically why. so how about you just shut up or present a logical reason why this bike is “horrendous!!! Oh my god my eyes!!! Gabe could build a better one!!!” you know what gabe does? strips the ten speed components, installs a cog and lockring, removes all but the largest chainring, and adds a matching bmx seat, cork tape, and a chain. the only stock things on my bike are the frame,
stem, and seatpost. I did all the labor. And I’ve got a decent variety of parts in a bike that doesn’t say “hey look at this tacky hipster!!” so piss off haters, this is leagues above a Gabe build.
April 21st, 2010 @1:13 pm
Luft, there’s obviously a bunch of wimps on here who hide behind their screens, too afraid to actually try to contribute. Seems like they sit back wishing they had something intelligent to say…all the while getting upset at the people who actually have opinions and aren’t afraid to voice them. So what do they do?… They probably 1 star a bunch of bikes while they work up the confidence to chime in here and there with what ends up being a bunch of nonsense hate. Lame.
April 21st, 2010 @3:40 pm
There seems to be those with words aplenty and those who’s bile and frustration rob them of wit and vocabulary. Sometimes this leads us to measure the man, perhaps a little harshly. Where you come from or how much schooling you got shouldn’t stop you reading any thing other than the tabloids. This alone could help enhance the depth of understanding in some of the more direct and reactive contributors on this site. I only completed the basic schooling myself. Have not been to university as it wasn’t something people where I grew up aspired to. I have always read widely.I still don’t consider myself “well read” though. There are many “classics” I have skipped. I prefer humour in what I read and find many humourous authors also have a great skill with words and phrasing. So I know a few words and can handle a spanner. To those detractors out there who turn straight to the sports pages I say “Show me your bikes and be judged as we judge” Don’t take it to heart if you get slated. I don’t. I wish the hate could be better worded though because, as I’ve mentioned above. I love a good read. Luftie; How am I doing on the creative writing stakes?
April 21st, 2010 @4:39 pm
You’re doing fine, Alan. I’ve done three years in college and it hasn’t done much for me but to accumulate a lot of debt.
If you’re gonna “one star” me at least have the balls to say why, rather than insult me like a tantrum throwing eight year old. And if you say you can build a better bike, then prove it. I bashed a lot of bikes but at least I posted my own for judgment. Cheers.
April 21st, 2010 @4:50 pm
I wouldn’t one star you. I gave you a ten cos I dig the bike. I’ll give it another if the system allows. It’s tidy.
April 21st, 2010 @4:56 pm
Nope it won’t let me vote again. Read again what I said. I wouldn’t put you in the ranks of funny page readers. What makes you think I would?
April 21st, 2010 @5:01 pm
luftmensh, did you put the crank arm on the outside of the chainring to get a straight chain line, or for the looks?
April 21st, 2010 @5:16 pm
Alan: my comment was directed to the aforementioned John Thompsom and DeepV. I know you’re cooler than that.
Wes: for a straight chainline. It was gonna be real tight inner mounted.
April 21st, 2010 @5:29 pm
Luftie; My apologies. It’s 1am here and the old eyes aren’t what they were. I misread you thinking you had misread me. Quell farce! Chainrings are a worry. The 1 I’ve put on the Claude just kept tightening+tightening. There’s about a mm between the teeth and the pedal arm. I thought it was going to foul. Seems not all square tapers are the same. Chain line does seem good though. Will be hacking the canti braze ons off when the sun comes up as I find I have some time on my hands. Just got suspended from work for leaving the van engine running while I delivered to a couple of customers. The battery was flat when I got in to work so I wanted to make sure it had some time to charge up. Fell foul of company policy and the law. Bit of a bummer but I didn’t want to let the customers down. You can’t please everyone. Night guys.
April 21st, 2010 @5:38 pm
Yup! I gave this “mountain looking bike” one star…It looks like crap! Sad to say but i rather ride your Raleigh then this crap…..I love to piss you off…We get to your head! hahaha..
Btw: The only thing you got going on here is your deep V’s..Bye Luftmensh..
April 21st, 2010 @6:21 pm
I also prefer Luftie’s Raleigh over the tank. But I’m Old School in more ways than one. The Tank must be Aluminum correct? It has nice looking drop outs..Chrome? Luftie, If you don’t care about some of the negative comments : relax and simply ignore them and keep riding and enjoy yourself. No need to figuratively flip them the bird !
April 21st, 2010 @6:26 pm
Wow. “Looks like crap.” Detail oriented aren’t you? I’d love to see you faceplant at 55mph when you lose it on my brakeless Raleigh at 52-13. Have fun riding your Wal-Mart fixed speed.
April 21st, 2010 @6:30 pm
Hey WSB: The Tank is an aluminum frame with a straight steel fork and chrome dropouts. I’d love to get a carbon fork to take out the handlebar buzz but whatever, not a big deal. I haven’t weighed it but it’s quite the effort up or down stairs and from my brothers truck bed. Cheers.
April 21st, 2010 @6:40 pm
I like the subtle color of the frame and tire combination. Did you spray the color of did it come this way? It is a color that you can live with and not tire of it seems. Only one decal on frame that’s a good thing. thanks.
April 21st, 2010 @7:05 pm
aluminum and steel fork!Luft, that is a perfect combo.I really like this understated presence and wonder what overweight means?that gearing seems easy enough for rec rides. The details are interesting and if some don’t get it-tough.ride the wheels off it.enjoy
April 21st, 2010 @8:06 pm
thanks guys, your comments make me feel warm and fuzzy.
wsb: specialized armadillos only come in this rusty color. i like the color but am curious what darker continental gator skins will look like. also, it isn’t a decal on the seat tube. it’s painted (weird i thought).
sloman: the aluminum is quite heavy, especially with the addition of the b43′s, but i take it up and off curbs, speed bumps, bumpy and cracked roads, dirt roads and gravel, etc. and i’m glad it feels so sturdy. i’ve tried 45-15, 46-15, 46-13, 42-15, 42-13, and 42-17 is the best so far. it’s a good cruising, spinning gear.
April 21st, 2010 @8:56 pm
Makes more sense than 52/13 and no brakes. Whiskey makes me feel warm and fuzzy too. In fact a cigar make me feel funny and weak in the knees about 7 years ago. Whiskey and a cigar ? I think I’ll sit down for that.
April 21st, 2010 @10:57 pm
If the RSGP was 58cm I’d keep it, get a brake, maybe a straight bar and a comfy new old stock saddle. Then I could drink my whiskey and smoke my cigar with class atop it.
April 22nd, 2010 @12:45 am
Luftie: the UK gets all black armadillos or the brick colour you’ve got. I was considering some when I got my schwalbes. I really like the combo of the green and brick though, they each compliment the other and it looks cool.
I’m looking for another project, preferably something modern and probably track frame based. Turns out I’m spoiled for choice, so should find something good soon
April 22nd, 2010 @5:49 am
Luftie I have a 60 cm Raleigh Record with no fork (it was bent) If you come to Chicago and the Art Institute (and go more in debt with education) I will give you the frame, school bus yellow. It should fit you at 5 11 ? If you don’t see the 62 the fork may be the same.
April 22nd, 2010 @8:14 am
That’d be cool WSB. Probably won’t be in Chicago until summer of 2012.
April 22nd, 2010 @10:28 am
No Problem, I don’t move too fast. I put a straight fork off a Montgomery Ward or was it a curb find, not sure. The bike rides straight now i.e. no damage to the frame other than the fork which I cut up to see what the rattle was inside, thought it was a loose bearing from the headset. No the sound was a free piece of solder. The Raleigh is 26 TPI original and everything else is 24 on todays market place. The loose bearing are no problem except the retainers are Raleigh and the top piece is 26 TPI and has the race for the bearings built in. It would be nice to go chromed but hard to find. Better is new chromed with bosses for V brake and Chris King ? lots of dollars head set ? Sometimes a new bike (used) is cheaper than parts separately purchased. Some of the guys get lucky with this 20 dollar finds at Thrift stores. Not me only one 20 3 speed Raleigh 1976 with gel saddle. rims 590 and won’t take 622 . Chicago is not too cheap for apts. Art institute is a nice part of the central city as you probably know. You will need a folder for the public transportation system and to throw in the trunk etc.
April 22nd, 2010 @2:19 pm
26 TPI. and that has a cotterless crank? I hear that’s a hard cup size to work around. I’m too cheap to upgrade and appreciate too much the original cranksets, as long as they’re well built and in good condition. So if the crank and bb are solid I’d just leave em as is. That’s why I’m hesistant to get another Peugeot should I want to upgrade bb or crank, funky threadings and sizes.
I haven’t done much research into Chicago living expenses, though I know it’s expensive. I plan to ride my bike and don’t ever plan on owning a folding. Are the trains that cramped? Sounds horribly claustrophobic. I was wondering whether it’d be worth it to live in the city and be close to school or stay in the suburbs and save a little money, but have to commute who knows how far or for how long. A lot of things to consider. Whether I’ll have my own car is another. I have a pos now but doubt it will make it another two years then over to Illinois.
Cheers.
April 22nd, 2010 @4:10 pm
Cottered Crank on the Raleigh with no fork (except temporarily the donor fork with caged bearings and donor races not chromed and headset not original) Claustrophobic in Chicago for sure. I commuted 26 miles to Univ. of Illinois and the ride was never much fun. Train lets you take bikes only in off peak hours. The Raleigh folder is not a lightweight 37 pounds with orig. mudguards, rack , steel wheels etc. My Raleigh Super Record is 21 pounds even with 630 mm rims and 32 mm tires. alloy rims with 52/18 and cut steel drops. This bike has sq. tapered cotterless alloy cranks. Deliver the Ral. SGP for a price to your buyer.
April 22nd, 2010 @7:02 pm
Dude you have too many Raleighs to keep track of. I guess interchangeabilitity is amazing though. The folder sounds intense. Off peak hours, that sucks!! The Max is crazy bike friendly here. But I spose Chicago is five times as big as Portland. And people are probably less “dude cool bike” as they are here.
I’m just not sure the Raleigh will even fit in my four door non hatchback ’96 hyundai accent. Quite cramped. And seriously, when you’re selling something you are not required to transport. And knowing these craigslist Portlanders it will be in Southeast, which is 90 minutes over the river through used car lots, strip clubs, and pawn shops. They’re just lazy. If they want it they can come and get it.
April 22nd, 2010 @10:53 pm
Hey Luft, What does the back side of the Messenger chainring look like? I’m wondering if it’s solid black, no print and could be run flipped around. Thanks…
April 22nd, 2010 @11:44 pm
WSB i’ve dealt w/ that off-peak situation the worst i’ve even had situations when during off peak hrs i’ve been denied access to mass transit. these bigger “bike friendly” cities have some of the most hostile anti cycling policies. i.e. philadelphia recent anti bike legislation and this morning right in nyc police without notice confiscated bikes along the presidential mortorcade route.
April 23rd, 2010 @4:50 am
ng, I’ll take a look.
Sup, confiscated? Why would they do that?
April 23rd, 2010 @5:29 am
Luftie, I looked up Portland on Google and yes Chicago is 5 times bigger but not 5 times nicer. Find peace in Portland , your winters are nothing compared to the Windy City. Confiscated bikes in New York, what is happening here? Makes me wonder where some bikes on Ebay come from. I bought used almost new Vuelta’s and the guy was removed as a seller not sure why. Almost expected an officer of the law to call me and inquire.
April 23rd, 2010 @5:41 am
I know. Everyone says the winters here are kind of a joke by comparison. But rain still sucks when it’s freezing and coming down for 8 months. I have about as much acceptance of this place as I ever will. Cheers.
April 23rd, 2010 @10:56 am
Portland is similar to the north of Holland where I was born. Damp weather and cold , not too much snow and only rarely is the ice thick enough on the canals to skate on. What about San Diego >?
April 23rd, 2010 @1:18 pm
San Diego averages about 10 inches of rain a year and average temp is about 70. There’s not too much to complain about. Definitely makes for great riding conditions most of the time. I’m originally from the north east so it’s kind of like a permanent vacation… A couple weeks back I felt my first major earthquake…I’m sure you guys heard about it. It was just south of the border and registered 7.2 I think. We were in a pub watching Tour of Flanders when the floor felt like it turned to water and the whole place swayed back and forth. It was pretty cool.
April 23rd, 2010 @1:43 pm
“Califoooornniia, beauuuuutiful.” Get the reference? Yeah the quiet suburban streets of West Covina were nice for the first five years of my life but I just think cost of living is too expensive, it’s crowded, traffic and commuting sucks, there’s smog, earthquakes, wildfires, droughts. I’m not seeing a lot of positives here. Los Angeles obviously would be awesome for the wife’s graphic design career but what cali school has a top notch mfa creative writing program? And where would I teach? Chicago and the East Coast honestly have more and better schools. PSU and Marylhurst College are my only options here and I’m not really excited for either. Beaches you can actually swim at, sunshine, and graphic design are the only things drawing me to California. Otherwise it’s “CHI-CA-GO!! You’re outta here.” Get that reference? Same actor. Cheers.
April 23rd, 2010 @2:09 pm
the N.C.coast was such a pleasant surprise for me.A bit of SoCal almost, beaches(clean, free, uncrowded)low cost of living(but getting higher-nowhere near Cali).could use more jobs and Democrates, but neither one bothers me as much as earthquakes.an hurricanes give you plenty of warning.Born in LA,raised inNY,happy in NC.
April 23rd, 2010 @2:17 pm
They probably swiped the bikes to make sure none of the tubes were packed with stuff that went bang. I seem to recall that the vietcong used that little party pooper to upset your countrymen.
April 23rd, 2010 @2:19 pm
Sorry, were should read weren’t. A bit of a Freudian there. Could understand them packing explosives into every nook and cranny to get Bush, but this new guy is popular, isn’t he?
April 23rd, 2010 @2:25 pm
Crazy, bikes with bombs or Suicide human bombers. May as well clear the people out of the Presidential motorway. Makes no sense. Alan are you still working?
April 23rd, 2010 @3:55 pm
Not actually working. Suspended on full pay. Hey the weather is nice in the u.k at the mo so no worries. Had some topsoil delivered today so I was able to fill the veg boxes I built and plant the seed potatoes. Come August I’ll have fresh every day. Have a meeting with the Brass on Moday to see where they want to take this. They don’t know how to deal with someone honest after spending so many years covering thier own asses. That’s the nature of promotion in most places I’ve found. I’ve always turned it down coz I know I’d be a complete bastard.
Thanks for your comment on one of the other posts. It touches me. Have you seen my link on the Paris. I think you will enjoy.
April 23rd, 2010 @7:30 pm
I hope we aren’t getting political here……he he he. Democrates? hmmm.
April 23rd, 2010 @7:38 pm
no,not getting political-too much of that in the world as it is.Just bad spelling combined with one hand typeing.sorry folks
April 23rd, 2010 @7:54 pm
I’m glad to hear you’re getting paid leave, Alan. It’s sort of nice here,
the typical back and forth Oregon spring, 68 and sunny, 52 and rainy, currently the latter, soon to be the former, drinking negra modelo waiting for enchiladas to bake.
Sloman: North Carolina? Raleigh was a strange airport. Rock Hill, SC was hellaciously humid and I nearly died riding my grandfather’s old 10 speed up some hills. After having been away from Daytona Beach, FL for ten years I can’t stand the stuff. Other than the humidity it was quite nice. 70 and sunny, real estate dirt cheap compared to the NW, people even in the service industry were outspokenly polite (“Did you want that burger all the way?”), and there were a lot of cool cars and people who drove them fast. That’s what I remember.
April 23rd, 2010 @8:36 pm
sounds about right.but I’m on the coast so the humidity only gets oppressive in August.Everyone goes to Hell–to cool off.Heat doesn’t bother me,long as I got a cool place to sleep. And my favorite ride is to the beACH.
April 23rd, 2010 @9:21 pm
Dude that’d be nice without humidity. And you don’t catch any hurricanes? Too bad I can’t think of any major cities or colleges in the…is that still the south? Or east coast? I don’t consider myself to have ever lived in the south. Florida doesn’t count.
April 27th, 2010 @12:10 am
yes!! so excited. i’m selling my soma double clips which were too small, and honestly the sound of metal clips is atrocious to my ears, and my fubar double straps which are so tight you can’t get back in (no pun intended). i’ll be getting some awesome alternative frs called aurora from germany once i sell the soma/fubar setup. wish me luck because i’m so d4mn picky.
May 20th, 2010 @5:56 pm
My eyes!
May 20th, 2010 @6:01 pm
Blinded by beauty?
May 21st, 2010 @10:07 pm
This is actually pretty cool. I’m just an idiot.
May 21st, 2010 @10:45 pm
I’m still waiting for “submitted by John Thompson” and “submitted by DeepV” and “submitted by eh!!!”
May 27th, 2010 @1:15 pm
I am not sure how somebody else was able to post under my name. It is very interesting so I have to find out from myfixedgear.net@gmail. Could be a lawsuit in the future, let’s see what happens.
John Thompson
May 21st, 2010 @10:07 pm
This is actually pretty cool. I’m just an idiot.
I did not submit this so let’s see if the lawyers can work this out.
This is one of the worse bikes on this site by far, by far.
May 27th, 2010 @1:21 pm
JT,save the money and buy a bike.any bike.might mellow ya out seeing as how you can’t get laid.now bugger off.
May 27th, 2010 @1:23 pm
HAHAHAHA!!!!! Awesome!! John Thompson!!!!!!!! is gonna take you to court! OMG it gets better every time!
May 27th, 2010 @2:01 pm
HAHAHAHAHA lololol I AM GOING TO SUE YOU FOR TROLLING ME! this guy cant be for real. I have a sneaking suspicion John Thompson is actually one of you guys trying to troll everyone else.
anyway, my 2cents on this bike:
not feeling sloping top tube or the risers. although im not sure what handlebars would work better on a sloping top tube frame. bullhorns?
other than that i can dig it. like the army green with red.
May 27th, 2010 @2:55 pm
I think Sloman has JT figured out. good call ! maybe his bike is WTF
May 27th, 2010 @3:17 pm
JT, you are such a tosspot. Get a life, get a wife and get to fuck. You pedantic little bore.
May 27th, 2010 @3:49 pm
JT, grow some cojones (or borrow some off your mum), man up, and accept the fact that your username got RAPED!!
You do realise just how easy it would be for just about anyone to use your name? Jeez! You do seem to enjoy picking on the bikes that have had some real spanner time put into them, but I guess it could be your nature. Ho hum…
“Why do we always get the big ass thick mutherfuckers?”
Cheers for making me laugh again.
And once again Luftie, Great build- the effort you put in is obvious
May 27th, 2010 @4:32 pm
Wow that’s funny. Have fun with the lawsuit, John. Meanwhile I’ll be riding my bike outside.
@ill: tried bullhorns. definitely gave it more of an aggressive look but weren’t comfortable as the risers. drops not an option. that leaves…?
Cheers.
May 28th, 2010 @4:18 am
Ich bin John Thompson. Ist dieses ein Witz? Ich bin eine wirkliche Person, aber mein wirklicher Name könnte sloman oder Luftmensh sein, die kennt?
May 28th, 2010 @6:25 am
Ich glaube das nicht. Du bist der werkelicht JT.
June 18th, 2010 @3:06 pm
Holy cow, that’s a lot of comments (almost gave up scrolling, ha). Love this build. So legit. Something really special about those taped risers. No nonsense. Well done!
July 15th, 2010 @9:35 am
needs a good set of Power Grips and drops!!!
July 19th, 2010 @12:18 am
Thanks Mark!! Sloman, don’t get me started.
July 19th, 2010 @1:35 am
Nice… But handlebar quite long, would deserve a better saddle. And maybe another colour for the tires…
August 3rd, 2010 @4:34 pm
word. my new plan is to get black drops with black track grips, keep the bar mount brake, get a San Marco Rolls (maybe), black tires, and strip the green paint down to the bare aluminum. This won’t be done for some time—-too much debt, and too little of an income. Wish me luck.
August 3rd, 2010 @4:41 pm
Luftie, eggs over easy ? and retro pics applied too. No bacon with those eggs ? Sell the tank and start over it won’t be any more expensive will it ? Sell the wife’s bike when she next leaves town with out you !
August 3rd, 2010 @5:00 pm
sunny side up. there’s a strip of bacon just beneath the eyeballs. there’s no point in selling a fully built bike, woody. i’ll never get what i’ve put into it. and i bought the wife’s bike for $25 and isn’t worth much more.
August 10th, 2010 @11:30 pm
Wow, 4.92. Fuck y’all I like my bike.
September 1st, 2010 @7:58 am
Luft…. I really like your bike, I would definately change the saddle, and something sems funny about the angle of your risers. I think its awesome that you have taped risers. I like the pop of color those tires give to the bike. I really do wish more bike companies would sand down thier aluminum welds (like the old Cannondales). Great bike, and I love how different it looks from your other bike, no point in having two similar bikes. 9/10!!
September 1st, 2010 @9:52 am
Wow, the trolls and the Internet Tough Guys have hit this thread hard.
Anyway nice bike, cool color choices.
