I cut the steerer tube 1″ so it doesn’t look so commuter. Was thinking of getting some shorter risers. Yes? Cheers.

Luft, you’re a brave guy for putting a face shot on here considering your “fan club”. Hahaha! I hope JT doesn’t get any bad ideas.
July 21st, 2010 @12:31 pm
nice kicks… along with your bike. totally agree with NG
July 21st, 2010 @1:22 pm
i don’t know those shoes are pretty hipster and yeah cut those bars
July 21st, 2010 @2:26 pm
so i take it army green is your fave color lol…my cars caned that same green haha…. you remind me of peewee from Kumbia kings lol…
July 21st, 2010 @3:20 pm
Ummm I only want to see pics of a hot chick with your bike Dude!
As your sis next time! Nice frame, are you in the army?
July 21st, 2010 @3:44 pm
Like the way the shirt matches the frame. Bright shoes. Good to be seen by car drivers. Are those bullet holes in the tree in the last shot? Was wondering if the “fan club” had caught up with you already. Good to see your boat at last. Cheers Luftie.
July 21st, 2010 @5:02 pm
Thanks for the comments guys. It’s nice to know people can see the good beneath the cynical facade.
Anthony, I don’t have a sister. If you wanna see chicks on bikes go to http://chicksandbikes.blogspot.com/
I’m not in the army…I’m from Oregon and like earth tones? I’ve heard it called olive green.
Everyone needs a pair of hightops.
Didn’t notice the bullet holes, I live in a somewhat suburban area now but maybe one of the wealthy homeowners around there let off some mortgage-related steam.
July 21st, 2010 @5:13 pm
I love this bike! And I love you too Luftmensh.
July 21st, 2010 @5:45 pm
Hey buddy, that’s great. We ought to have a beer sometime if you’re ever in Portland.
July 21st, 2010 @5:51 pm
Yeah right Luft….so he can hack you up with a dull axe?
July 21st, 2010 @6:03 pm
needs drops and power grips to be truly gangsta.looks good still ,even with those shoes.Don’t forget to duck Luft.
July 21st, 2010 @6:25 pm
Surprise, you don’t look nearly as arrogant as you come off. And the bars are too long but make a dandy coat rack.
July 21st, 2010 @6:29 pm
Luft- when you cut the steerer tube, did you have to recreate the threads for the remaining end or did your threads go past the 1″ you cut? I cut the steerer tube on the Brera about that much and I was right on the edge of running out of threads – and I did have to extend the threads. It worked but I was pretty stressed about it.
–
As an aside, I like your ride. The bars do seem quite wide.
July 21st, 2010 @7:11 pm
ng, you know I was kidding right?
wsb, you haven’t seen me talking about my writing.
slo, give it up haha
fab, yes had to rethread but not a big deal. it seems common most modern commuterish bikes come with higher steerer tubes standard for a more ergonomic stance, which, frankly, looks dumb.
I’ll begin work on the bars immediately because I value your opinions. That and I’ve been wanting to for some time. Angle grinder? Cheers boys.
July 21st, 2010 @8:14 pm
Luftie, for the bars I use a quality tubing cutter. Eastman Imperial or Ridgid. I have cut one bar down three times before I was comfortable with the length. too long and they hit door jams or hook little old lady’s purses. Too short and you run out of room for the lever and the Incredibell. When will you get the Nishiki ?
July 21st, 2010 @8:20 pm
I agree that there are some steerer tubes that are way out of control. But frankly I wouldn’t have included yours in that group. I don’t think it looked bad with the additional inch. But it doesnt look wrong with it gone either. I took a peek at the “Tank” thread to make sure I wasn’t just misremembering. Bars like yours, and the Noah’s arc which i am currently on just amaze out of the box. Who would *ever* want them that long? Even if you had to fit two brake levers and shifters? Even with doubled barrelled bells they are obscenely wide. The Somas were 57cms new? That’s just insane. How much are you going to shave?
July 21st, 2010 @8:22 pm
Oh and I used a hacksaw and guides on my bars. It took me a whole 20 seconds a cut
July 21st, 2010 @8:51 pm
Hacksaw works too of course and a file to smooth it after cutting. The Noah’s Arc is the one I cut three times around 6 inches shorter now and still plenty of bar.
July 21st, 2010 @9:13 pm
Of course I knew you were kidding. We all know JT is too busy working on that lawsuit to hang out.
July 21st, 2010 @9:23 pm
@WSB: I am at minus 4″ currently and feel like I could take some more off without issue. I was thinking of an inch per side, which would bring me to where you are. The one thing I am nervous of is that the Arc isn’t actually a perfect arc, and I don’t want to end up with a flat bar without the slope.
July 21st, 2010 @10:54 pm
btw respect on the full disclosure here you go.?

July 21st, 2010 @11:37 pm
well you defnetly look nothing like what I envisioned(not a bad thing)and nice bike, apart from the bars I like it,maybe there can be a post for everyone to post a head/body shot with their bikes and put (headshot) next to the title?….maybe not but next time I post a bike I will be in it
July 22nd, 2010 @5:31 am
Nishiki in two weeks…can’t wait!! A funny point my buddy made was that Nishiki is (correct me if im wrong) a Japanese brand and therefore should be smaller than the giant American brands I’ve had so far, ie Raleigh, Schwinn, KHS. I got a KHS Competition 12 spd road bike for free and its 61 with a 63 standover. As far as the bars go I’m thinking around three inches both sides. I was riding the other day and noted the innermost point at which my hands felt comfortable. They really are too wide.
July 22nd, 2010 @6:39 am
Luftmensh, you are a superstar, like the update. I think the risers are fine, depending on what your using them for. I always judge my riser length in regards to, how small of a space I would like to be able to squeeze through when riding. It’s a moto jungle out there, you don’t wanna clip a car or mirror with the end of your bars. Enjoy!
July 22nd, 2010 @5:05 pm
It’s more likely they’ll just hit me head on. Maybe bullhorns to distance myself from the point of impact? Kidding.
July 23rd, 2010 @1:05 pm
John Thompsonn are you sleeping ?
July 23rd, 2010 @1:13 pm
get a RR-Handlebar, then it’s perfect.
July 23rd, 2010 @1:23 pm
Lufty, how do you figure Japanese frames are smaller?A 55cm is still 55cm even in Tokyo.nice frames but still sized the same. Now Italian sizing, that is weird. My two Bianchis are 55s but one measures out at 57,the other at 54.enjoy it though, hope it works out good.
July 23rd, 2010 @2:12 pm
Italians…….thay think they can say anything….baaarrh we will just say it is 55cm,they won’t complain…its italiano
July 23rd, 2010 @3:22 pm
LOL–thats about right.I think it has to do with stated weight/size.Or maybe not.Anyway they sure know what looks great!cheers
July 23rd, 2010 @10:22 pm
Yeah the bars def look wide. I’d go with wsb’s suggestion of the pipe cutter. We have a shelf of them at our shop for just this purpose. Bike looks good.
Also sup, I like your bsnyc-esq pic and i LOVE your cannondale! I like to see that you Do the right thing.
July 24th, 2010 @1:39 am
you look like a dick. just what i was expecting by reading you comments. plus you have no style at all.
July 24th, 2010 @1:39 am
@sup are those your bikes on the flickr??
very very nice!!!
July 24th, 2010 @5:38 am
@sup – what a sick wheel set on your Cannondale
@luft – 55cm is 55cm is 55cm – international standard. The only difference would be bikes like wes’ that have a much higher bottom bracket. So as he says, his 53 is like a 57.
July 24th, 2010 @7:00 am
@daniel, sounds like you’re the dick. If I remember correctly I didn’t like your bike, but at least I have the balls to show my face.
@everyone regarding size, duh I realize 55cm is a standard measurement that doesn’t change over large bodies of water. I was jokingly making a racial comment that Japanese frames are made in smaller sizes because they’re generally smaller people. Zoom!! Last time I make deadpan humor.
July 24th, 2010 @8:28 am
Luftie, Daniel’s Simonelli Centurion is a sharp bike. And, you are a less than diplomatic critiquester !
July 24th, 2010 @9:19 am
Whatever
July 24th, 2010 @9:30 am
Sorry guys I don’t want to be the town asshole anymore.
July 24th, 2010 @11:22 am
next time make it funny so we know it’s funny.Racism is never funny.
July 24th, 2010 @11:27 am
i dunno luft..after seeing some of your latest comments and looking over your bicycle, you come off like a prick. i have a particular taste and comment on bikes i dont like..but there is a way to go about it. i keep in mind that most people have a connection to their bikes and nomatter what my taste is, they are proud of their bike. im not saying its wrong to critique, thats the point of the site..but i feel like, if you see a bike and say “that (kishamax)saddle look like crap” and you have a cheap velo saddle on your bike, well..you opinion is automatically considered dog shit by others. im not speaking bad of you. i just think youve come off like a cunt lately.
so, about the bike..not my taste but not horrible. i think an upgraded crank and saddle would help. and the bars are a bit wide. while im not a fan of your frameset, if its all you had to work with i think youve made the best of it. not bad..i give it a 7.
July 24th, 2010 @11:30 am
HAHAHAHAHAH…luft, your funny. i get it, i get it..asians are short and your a bastard racist. thumbs down luft.
see, me saying your funny was an OBVIOUS joke. thats how its done.
July 24th, 2010 @12:50 pm
@luft i am sorry for saying you look like a dick.
but reading your bad comments on almost every bike here really pisses me off. (me and 90% of the community here)
oh and i know that you dont care and you wont quit…
July 24th, 2010 @1:34 pm
Wow, fellas, there’s the grit I was talking about. I humbly accept your bashing, criticism, and critique of the tank (jcore). I’d love a new crank and saddle but have a ton of debt and will be getting a second job soon to pay some of it off, so I won’t turn down a Miche Advanced crankset or Selle San Marco Concor if you feel so inclined. I agree I haven’t taken into consideration people’s personal connections with their bikes and have become the community meanie, which is something I’d like to relinquish immediately. I admit that was a bit racist of me to say but I am no racist, and many of you have made your own racist comments in the past, I won’t point fingers, and hardly received any flack for it. So please pardon my slip. And I’ll do my best to be a Nicemensh.
July 24th, 2010 @1:53 pm
I humbly accept your bashing, criticism and critique of the tank. I’ve become too inconsiderate in my comments and haven’t taken into account a person’s intimate connection with their bike. That joke was in bad taste but I am not a racist, and without pointing fingers plenty of you others have made racist comments in the past. No this doesn’t justify it, but nonetheless I’m not the first one to let one slip. In regard to the tank, I’ll be getting a second job on top of my full time to pay for some incredible debt, so if you should feel so inclined to buy me a Miche Advanced crankset and Selle San Marco Concor I wouldn’t turn them down. I totally agree with you guys that this commuter style frame is trendy and will definitely be dated but there’s not much I can do about that except hope the Nishiki I get on the 5th is a good fit then I’ll finally have a lugged frame which will satisfy your want of a decent frame for me. Cheers, Luftmensh.
July 24th, 2010 @1:53 pm
This bike looks awful. Buy a mercier. It’s inexpensive and doesn’t look like shit.
July 24th, 2010 @1:58 pm
I’ll take that into consideration.
July 24th, 2010 @2:02 pm
your bike is not bad luft. i never said that. my bike is not better than yours. its just a beater and i had some ebay luck on the frame….nothing i can be proud of haha
July 24th, 2010 @2:40 pm
Technically the comment wasn’t racist. It was an implication of an insult to short people if there’s an assumption that height-challenged people (from Japan or anywhere) are worse off. Darwin has other ideas –size is of relative importance. NOTE: The Dutch are statistically the tallest people in the world (insert joke that isn’t technically racist here). I think the consensus is that you’re an asshole. Race-bating asshole? yes. Racist… maybe so. The jury is still out on that. Keep up with the jackass comments and we’ll have a better idea. Other people on this site are racist? Evidence please.
Your insincere false humility is contemptible as you simultaneously apologize and point fingers. The fact that your olive green, military colored bike is nothing much to talk about and the so-called bashing of it (on this string) are unrelated. Besides, the bulk of the comments –about the bike– are encouraging (as most of us try to be) and pretty positive. I think we are seeing a need for the sadist to play the victim here so any negative comments will appear retaliatory. …As we watch Luftie ride down the rails on a crazy train.
Now to the bike: It looks alright. Nothing special. Its set up looks right and that tells me that whoever you are; you spend time riding. Nice wheels. I can’t get past the color. Too WW2 for my taste.
July 24th, 2010 @2:54 pm
i love your comments jqnc
July 24th, 2010 @5:00 pm
Insincere false humility? Why do I even bother trying to say something honest about myself to you guys? You call me out, I admit I’m a jerk, then you tell me I’m lying? Wow jq, not sure what to say after that. I guess there’s no escaping the cynic archetype. I just don’t like being called racist when I’m nowhere near. Remember this?
http://www.myfixedgear.net/sha-knee-quah
I may be downright cynical and obnoxious but I’m a decent person at heart and don’t appreciate getting slammed for admitting I’m human. Is that sincere enough for you?
July 24th, 2010 @9:47 pm
luft-now i must agree with you..im not going to bash someone for a sincere apology. if it wasnt sincere than thats between you and whatever you consider your “higher power.” most people on here would come back with fighting words when they get called out so for the fact that you actually admitted the crappy attitude youve had lately, i think the people on here should forgive and forget..if it even bothered them in the first place. anyways..cheers.
July 25th, 2010 @6:29 am
Ahh! let the healing begin! ? You get a pass on all previous asshole-comments (race-baiting or otherwise). because you found one racist post. Who, by the way, had the commonsense not to try and defend himself by finding a worse example and stopped posting entirely. You (on the other hand) would rather taint the whole site with a wide accusatory brush about “plenty of others.” “Im so sorry… but!” But what? But you don’t want to “point fingers”? Because a “decent/cynical person” doesn’t point fingers? “Not the first to let one slip?” Sounds pretty insincere to me. Actually it sounds like contradictory bullshit (like most of your back-pedaling posts of colliding antonyms). Amend the cynical behavior and we’ll see how sincere you are. Yeah, I’m calling you out.
July 25th, 2010 @7:37 am
Another 10 post by JQnyc. a masterful man of prose. Luftie you may as well take writing lessons from this man and forget the formal education. I wish both of you lived on my street I could learn a lot and enjoy your company.
July 25th, 2010 @9:14 am
thanks for the comments on my bikes gentlemen.
@cs doctor…always do the right thing. i’m thinking of doing the 5boros ride next year dressed as mars blackmon i gotta go to canal st. and get the nameplate made first.
luft is catching hell right know but it took guts to show his face, the dude cannot abide with any racism but at least he apologized for his stupidity some others should follow his example wsb
July 25th, 2010 @9:54 am
We see your true colors at last, jq. You’re sounding very cynical and malicious for the protagonist. I will do what I believe I am meant to do, and you can continue to write what others perceive to be masterful prose but in reality is merely cleverly phrased personal attacks (and yes I know all about this).
Wooden, I take extreme offense at the writing lesson comment. My writing is sacred to me, so please don’t ever pretend to know anything about my capability.
July 25th, 2010 @11:14 am
Luftie, I have read a lot of your comments and of others. You are a harsh critic of others and you are also hard on yourself. Have respect and love for yourself be kind and others will show you respect. i.e. mellow out. JQ writes well and I have respect for his opinions and agree with most of his observations. on the other hand you are good reading but caustic like sulphuric acid at times.
July 25th, 2010 @11:51 am
@freshher, That would be awesome. If you do dress up like Mars you HAVE TO wear some 80′s air jordan’s!!! It’s gotta be the shoes!!
The intensions and targets are different but its still the same action.
-
I don’t know that it took a lot of guts to post a pic with him in it. It’s not like any of us live anywhere near him and its not like he has any of his personal information on the site. I feel like it was more of an attention grabbing move. Posting an update after cutting just a steer tube (especially when he’s criticized on other peoples updates for the minor changes), making a comment that’s just on the edge of racially charged and then being the first person to bring up that it may be on the edge of racism (sloman never said what he said was racist and didn’t even suggest it, the racial part only came with luftmensh’s comment) both seem like actions meant to stir the pot. I mean even the username ‘luftmensh’ says what he thinks of himself and wants to project to everyone else; an ‘educated’ person with no applicable skills. Putting yourself in the underdog setting and then making absolute statements to people isn’t exactly humble. Overall a lot of his comments come off as attention grabby. I should know because a lot of mine are too
-
Honestly I don’t really think it matters all that much. Compared to a lot of people who leave cutting remarks(eg, newcastle, johnthomas, anyone who’s only reply is ‘you’re fucking gay’, etc) on posts online his are pretty mild and harmless. He’s not advocating anything dangerous and when he talks like he knows about something he doesn’t it gets pointed out pretty quickly (another side product of shooting ones mouth off to a crowd). Really its just building up his projected persona online, which we all are doing whether its intensional or not. Whether the persona is who he actually is or who he wants people to think he is is still in question and something we most likely will never know for sure.
July 25th, 2010 @12:05 pm
You made some excellent points CS. The main reason I updated was at other’ request, but I also enjoy the limelight. My social life is lacking to say the least, as I find myself living the life of a middle aged man, working 40 hours a week, coming straight home for a nice cold drink, enjoying a quiet weekend inside with only my immediate family, then work resumes. So you could say my life is limited to the constrains of my own imagination. My emotions, however flawed, passionate, inspiring or offensive come through my thoughts and words full force, and I cannot always control what comes out. And when it comes to the one thing I enjoy above all else, writing, there’s nothing humble about it for me.
July 25th, 2010 @12:18 pm
I wasn’t exactly talking you up. More of the same it seems though.
July 25th, 2010 @11:59 pm
Yes, CS, I got that. I was merely being polite, not oblivious.
July 26th, 2010 @12:16 am
its a solid build. i dig it. lets just say its not my personal cup of tea with its relaxed TT and olive frame, but it seems well put together. like the maroon wall armadillos with the olive.
July 26th, 2010 @5:03 am
K just wanted to be sure.
July 26th, 2010 @5:10 am
Tank is a good solid ride that does what it is supposed to do.Well thought out and owner built.Personality shows through.I’d ride it(after I changed those bars lol)enjoy
July 26th, 2010 @8:42 am
Thanks guys. I appreciate your comments and tolerance of my insanity.
July 29th, 2010 @3:53 pm
Steady on guys. Do I really need to post another shit bike on here to get you all pulling in the same direction again? Well, DO I? I’m warning you. I’ve got one lined up ready to go and am ready to take the flack from purists an deep pocket posers alike. Race or religion should not be the cause of so much hatred. Save that for those who deliberatly wrong you. As regards the tank. The man built it himself. It does what it should. It’s form and colour is his personal taste. So be it. I’ve been attacked on here for wearing purple socks. My taste, not someone elses, obviously. I’ve never been knocked off my bike wearing them though. Maybe they’re lucky. Be lucky chaps.
July 29th, 2010 @5:16 pm
Nice, Alan. Like I mentioned on Blue Aurora I have some ideas for the tank and even worked up a schematic of sorts but have no cash yet to support it. I’ll probably post it, you know CS, cuz I like to get a rise out of people and be the center of attention. What? I’m not disputing it, I’m agreeing with you
July 29th, 2010 @5:34 pm
I almost wonder if Luftie’s Creative Writing Professor encourages some attitude in his posts and grades him on the number of comments posted clearing the air and hashing it out and forcing us to jump all over the keyboard.
July 29th, 2010 @5:39 pm
Right on Allen. Lets get past this. Who cares if hes a mean-spirited, illiterate race-baiting, bully. No reason to attack him. Especially now that hes on a full blown charm offensive. He did “apologize.” I “like” the new Luftie! As a fixed gear aficionado; a connoisseur, crankmeister par excellence there is no getting around it. He is one of us. Lufties ideas and opinions should be respected no matter how contradictory and poorly expressed. Who among us (from time to time) hasn’t humiliated themselves with angry quips that defy logic followed by misdirected, back-pedaling attacks? Absolutely, Allen. I for one extend my hand in friendship. You’ve got to love the one, the only Luftmensh. Forgive and forget; thats my motto. Whew! I feel so much better now that I’ve let it go. Thanks Allen! I needed that.
Now about the bike: looks like a nice ride but I don’t like the color. Too drab.
July 29th, 2010 @7:00 pm
So what ever happened to J.T. ? Pedal Junction anyone ?
July 29th, 2010 @8:43 pm
that’s what i like to see let’s all get along. now back to bike’s and movie quotes.
@ allan i’ve got purple socks too it’s the cplour of royalty, stay gold.
July 29th, 2010 @8:43 pm
*colour
July 30th, 2010 @5:24 am
Fiction can be fun, jq. Glad to have your charming friendship again.
July 30th, 2010 @10:52 am
What’s gotten into you, jq? Suddenly you’re consumed by the need to attack me personally rather than critique the bikes. It’s obvious you don’t like me, you’ve made that clear, but shall we set our personal differences aside and focus on what’s more practical, mostly positive and entertaining? That is, talking about bicycles.
July 30th, 2010 @3:39 pm
@ cs my mars outfit need the chain and the cazals. it is about the shoes so the 5′s or the 8′s
http://www.flickr.com/photos/50681249@N06/4844990412/in/photostream/
July 30th, 2010 @5:37 pm
Luftie, If you spray this bike it may look good as a Cranberry, deep rich red color. The wheels have the rich red already. The color now is more or less what they call Olive Drab Green as your fan club points out. Have a Blue Moon and comtemplate that. Curious how the 62 cm. Raleigh Super Grand Prix is doing with the long legged fellow who bought it from you.
July 30th, 2010 @5:57 pm
strip it and leave it raw!no muss,no fuss,no cost.If that’s only paint it comes off easy.A coat of wax and you’re golden.neutral color so any color is complementary.Let that aluminum shine !
July 30th, 2010 @5:58 pm
then you spend the paint money on the Nishiki.
July 30th, 2010 @6:36 pm
@sup, THAT JERSEY IS FUCKING AWESOME. Sadly I don’t actually know enough about jordan’s to choose (I’m just familiar with spike and remember the commercials), but I say go with the right pair. If you’re going to do it go all out. Also, I noticed your macbook pro (or powerbook, I can’t see the ports well in the pic). If it breaks you should swing through stl and i’ll fix it!
July 30th, 2010 @8:49 pm
Hey slo not a bad idea. Actually crossed my mind today, stripping paint and leaving it. I don’t know for sure the Nishiki will even be a road bike let alone a man’s model. A free bike’s a free bike, if nothing else I’ll clean it up and sell it for Tank parts. Here’s hoping it’s a man’s 57cm.
sup: those are some sick hightops dude. Truly fresh.
July 30th, 2010 @8:51 pm
it’s a pro and pleeeeeeeeeease don’t jinx me! right pair are the 8′s color is better but the left pair (v’s) are made of 3M reflective material so are perfect for the eventual bar crawl afterwards. it’s a conundrum.
July 30th, 2010 @9:21 pm
@ luft thanks, you can’t go wrong w/ jordan’s

July 31st, 2010 @9:48 am
That’s awesome.
August 3rd, 2010 @4:38 pm
i have a new master plan for the tank: black drops, black track grips, San Marco Rolls (maybe, still not decided), black tires, and a can of paint stripper to get down to the beautiful bare aluminum. if anyone has some spare black tires, don’t care about wear, i’ll take em. this is the part where i hold up the cardboard sign that says ANYTHING HELPS with the tank leaning against a freeway off ramp. thanks dudes and dames.
August 3rd, 2010 @4:57 pm
Man o man, what a coooooool jersey Sup. Although coming from you that shouldn’t surprise me anymore. Re: the color of your ride, Luft, I have to agree that it would be much nicer if you do paint it. With that said, how much are you going to be using this after you get the Nishiki? Am I correct in thinking that you bought a track frame? Or is it a road bike? I was convinced of the former. I like the suggestion of cranberry. My personal favorite is orange, but I know you don’t like it much. The ultimate, IMHO, would be to paint it rather bright and cheery (especially for PDX where the winters are gray gray gray – did I ever tell you I went to school in Portland?) and then get a chrome flat crowned fork. The fork is the thing that just doesn’t do it for me. Anyway, any color change would be for the better. BTW – how many inches did you end up shaving from the bars?

Oh and for what its worth, if you read jq’s statement trying to be as objective as possible, I think you will find that he’s not attacking you at all and rather saying that while he thinks blah blah blah about you, he finds you knowledgeable about our hobbies and respects your opinions. He also is saying that he likes how much you have tried to be less abrasive. I would take it positively. Be well.

I have an extra pair of tires for you Luft. Not totally black though. They are the ones on my Bianchi in the pictures. If you want them, they are yours. fedecrib@gmail.com

appreciate the offer, fab, but i need total black ones. not sure what to say about jq. it all sounds sarcastic, and the word “illiterate” stings when you’re a writer, even though it makes no sense.
August 4th, 2010 @11:30 am
What inspired your intended black and silver theme Luft?
August 7th, 2010 @7:07 am
Luftie, I’ve been thinking about your bike for a while now. The sloping toptube is finally starting to grow on me. It looks comfy as hell. Like a bunch of the other kids here though, that army green is a bit off-putting. Wanna know what I would do? Probably not, but I’ll tell ya anyway. Powdercoat the frame sky blue, to encourage the eye to look at the perimeter. Two inches of each end of the bar, but keep the black tape, that’s wicked. Lower profile saddle, and to finish, a set of fyxation session 700 whitewalls. No? Fair enough. Just tryna help.
August 7th, 2010 @7:12 am
P.S now that you’re not a cunt anymore, I reckon we’d be mates outside of Flatland.
August 7th, 2010 @10:04 am
aarcadian, I suspect a name change went with your new logo picture. I like the dancing puffer or what ever bird it is, very nice. Luftie, divorce the Tank before it is too late and switch rides. It will sell as Hemingway’s ride. While you are at it switch names and drop the fried eggs and we will guess who you are by the tone of your comments and your ride. forget the Zoloft and go with Bass Ale for what ails you.
August 7th, 2010 @12:21 pm
Lufty ignore the heathens come join us on the raw side alum will be good alum will set you free alum will make you whole strip it raw and ride naked alum understands alum alum alum alum alum—

UPDATE: The charm offensive seems to be working but more importantly his writing has shown marked improvement. Either he is slowing down to catch mistakes or he has asked his boyfriend to proofread his prose before posting. It doesn’t matter which –We can now understand and follow his syntax. Im not so sure he was a cunt. I don’t think thats a fair comment. I was more offended by his sloppy writing. I hope that wouldn’t make him a sloppy cunt. Name-calling like that is just mean and uncalled for. I think it was a series of misunderstandings. A common problem when the words and sentences (of a post) aren’t chosen and assembled carefully. I am often guilty of that myself but at least I try. Luftie is trying too. Give this man a 10!
The Bike:
It looks like I’m not alone in thinking that the olive drab color of this bike is too military. You could wear an army jacket, jack boots from the Army/Navy and an army helmet to complete the look. Otherwise its a great ride!
August 7th, 2010 @2:35 pm
While I agree that he’s not a cunt, I don’t think that his persona of being a jerk was a series of misunderstandings. I think that a lot of what gave him a bad taint was blatant and purposeful mean spirited comments that were directed at people, not the bikes. I’m all about forgive but not forget and not misinterpret the past. He’s trying to be a better person online? Good for him, but lets not changed what he had done to get to that point.
August 7th, 2010 @3:02 pm
Yes, I stand corrected. I was attempting to be generous and I did (in fact) overstate. His intention was clear; even within the fog of his sloppy rhetoric. I suppose I was attempting to compensate for the “cunt” remark. I feel bad for him even if he deserves much of the reprisal. Would that make him a sad, sloppy cunt? I think thats too much. Still, he would be a former, sad, sloppy cunt. He has changed. I think of him more as a pathetic jackass that has changed his ways. Change is good. Love the Lufty.
August 7th, 2010 @3:10 pm
Ok, I’m sorry. Maybe I meant douchebag, or something of similar gavitas. Where I come from, cunt isn’t such a bad word. Sure, the elderly and the more polite amongst the women folk will cringe at it’s utterance, but I’d happily accept being called a cunt by a mate for pinching his last chip.
As for young Luftie, I don’t have the history you other guys do with him, but I’ve been hanging around here long enough to know that he wasn’t so well liked. Outsiders POV? It seemed, and correct me if I’m wrong Mr Mensh, that all the mean posts were some sort of alpha male community challenge. Kind of an ‘this is my opinion and if you disagree you better bloody fight for it’ kind of thing. The anonymity of the internets almost encourages it. In fact, my fiancé recently comment that this was the only forum she had seen that ISN’T filled with racism, sexism and anti-homosexualism. It’s a really good sign that whenever someone makes a feeble attempt at a joke that even slightly smells racist, the whole forum cracks him head in. I applaud you all for that. Luftie has obviously realised that it’s not so much fun being the hated elder statesman, and is having a crack at community harmony. Forgive but not forget? It’s a new day. Online, why not allow a man to reinvent himself?
– and Wooden Shoe, I’m not sure I follow the line about a name change to go with the puffin?
August 7th, 2010 @3:17 pm
Hey Luftie is ok. He’s learnt a lot in a short while. He will turn out some fantastic bikes in the future. He, like me is merely handicapped by lack of finances to help realize his true desires in bike building.
August 7th, 2010 @3:44 pm
Yes, douchebag. A much better description. Can I amend that by calling him a sloppy douchebag? Sorry, I mean a former, sloppy douchebag? Now that hes a good guy.
August 7th, 2010 @4:01 pm
Luftie has changed and the Charm is not offensive merely kind and considerate. My speech at home is not always charming and too often offensive when provoked ( the wife can attest to that ). However when at the keyboard there is time to taste the words before spitting them out and offending those I care about. I should have a time delay when speaking. With that in mind, some of the body parts mentioned here are bad words where I come from and do in fact make me CRINGE. the comments stay around for ever and reflect on our style and may be read by dear old MOM or client, brother or sister or even Pope Benedict with the tall hat. Can we get the point across more tastefully ? Thanks DICK

I’m not advocating a person never being able to change or not accepting a change. I just think you should be responsible for what you say to other people. If you’re going to get on a forum that’s built for commenting on bikes and cycling in general and you start taking digs at the actual people posting you shouldn’t expect a rosy reception. I know luftmensh knows this and has changed and I think that’s great, I just don’t think anyone should pretend like he’s never said anything bad to someone else or that what was said was a misinterpretation. That’s all.
August 7th, 2010 @4:50 pm
For what it’s worth, I think CS is spot on. Forgive, but don’t forget. And it takes more than 2 weeks of holding yourself back to make up for personal attacks on people because of their cycling choices. But we seem to be a forgiving bunch, and whether he was a douche, cunt, or simply a jerk, doesn’t matter. What matters most is what happens going forward. Where the past comes most into play, is that he has 0 margin for error. The benefit of the doubt is not something he’s getting anytime soon.
August 7th, 2010 @5:22 pm
Absolutely. I agree with all of the above. We live and die by our reputations. His is on the mend and thats a good thing. Nasty labels (like cunt, douchebag, sloppy douchebag, jackass, dickwad, scumbag etc.) may serve a purpose but lets not belabor the point. They linger in the mind and I think hes served his time. His social climbing skills are a little transparent but its something. As you say; kind and considerate. Un-provocative might be more accurate. Its a start.
August 7th, 2010 @5:40 pm
Awwww, guys, you’re making me blush. I will gladly wear the pin entitled “Former Sad, Sloppy Cunt” if it means I can be a positive, constructive and comprehensible influence upon and member of this brilliant online community. I won’t make excuses for the past, I was a jerk with fast hands making cracks at people who couldn’t see my face. This is the first forum I’ve ever fully participated in, and I guess kindness and consideration never really crossed my mind when I was commenting. I started my obsession with fixed gear gallery and would comment aloud to myself, quite cynically, “Why the hell did they do this? Man that looks dumb,” because no one could hear or reply to my bashing comments. I guess that trend followed me here. But after being called out on my overtly negative behavior I’m beginning to find a healthy balance between personal opinion and constructive criticism. I feel honored to have you guys around to keep me in line and accept me for who I am and everything that entails, such as neurosis, hypocrisy, cynicism, ignorance, cursing, and pride. So thanks!!
In other news, the Nishiki turned out to be a men’s 21 speed mountain bike (damn!!!!!) and I’ll probably be cleaning, tuning and selling that in a hurry. On a positive note i got some track grips in on trade and a brand spanking new saddle and set of drop bars are heading my way as we speak (yes!!!!). And slo, as a direct result of your recommendation, I’ll be taking the frame down to the bare naked aluminum. When I sell the Nishiki I’ll get new tires, paint stripper, work my A off and provide you gentlemen one hell of an update. Why did I decide to do the aluminum? Alan knows. Cuz it’s cheap!!!
August 7th, 2010 @5:43 pm
Okay guys—think of a nickname that plays off of aluminum. All I could think of was Aluminator but that sounds like a mix between a laser light show and a dildo.
August 7th, 2010 @5:44 pm
Luft was here when I signed on,seemed to know some stuff and had abit of a ‘tude sometimes .Then got a gruff, tuff thing going-tough guy persona and let some shit fly.Bad day?rough week? His business folks.Let it go.He still has a history of calling posers out, hipsters dipsters and fixers fixers.nice rides coming so let’s enjoy and get it done.enjoy the latest model and wish him well.
August 7th, 2010 @6:25 pm
Sloman the peace maker? hey wait we were already doing that.
August 7th, 2010 @8:04 pm
And so Luftmensh now you have five fathers, and one Dutch Uncle watching over you, and six or seven brothers and sisters. Does the Nishiki have a sloping top tube.? Maybe you could turn it into something like Das Balloon. Good luck .

August 8th, 2010 @12:13 pm
I dont think it has a sloping top tube. Just a normal, smaller frame 21 speed with massive knobby tires, which would do me no good around here in metropolis. Besides, I could really use cash more than another bike. Cheers fellas.

If you want some ideas for Japanese keirin frames, I have been obsessively looking around and actually found some lovely things that I am not going to use as I have my hands happily full. There is also a store right near me (not Velo) but Chari & Co. probably the most famous niche NJS/keirin store on the east coast by some opinions. I’ve seen many of their things at 30% of prices I see on the internet. SO let me know if you need a hand.
