So sorry this posting offends the delicate sensibilities of the genre-queers. Not really. This is an experiment for all that might consider this hub for a TRACK style frame. Opinions. First its heavy -a very dense hunk of metal. The rim is also heavier than the open pro previously mounted on this bike. It has a wider tire 28mm at 90 psi in the back and a 22/100 in the front. Softer ride? better traction? who knows? Anyway its a much heavier bike. Now, the coaster brake. I don’t like loosing the ability to back pedal. Its like I can’t stretch my legs and at a stoplight I find I need to lay my thigh on the top tube if my crank isn’t aligned properly. Still, its a fun way to stop and it brings back ancient memories. Now to the ability to change gears. Between the weight and the hesitation and time I spend thinking about the gear shifting, negotiating in my head, I think any advantage is a wash. Plus, if you don’t back-pedal to shift perfectly -you brake. Not good. I may put it back but I have other fixed etc. bikes and I only have 50 or 100 miles on it. The experiment isn’t quite done.

great you’re experimenting, glad for the words of one who owns one.just hate to see non fix-SS types precedent set.next we’ll have gears and MTB posts. eewwww. Coasters are cool(building one now) it’s the two speed part I object to.Gets away from the simplicity at the heart of fixed-SS riding.return to the fold son.

This here is a SS/fixed/track frame so it is a reasonable way to add a different cycling option to a frame never intended for gears. Kind of a reverse-conversion! I was frustrated by the lack of information or intelligent comments on “the bike called “Fixie Killer” and the 2-speed hub. I therefore went and tried it for myself. and above is my report. to review: Its heavy and requires a delicate touch while shifting, otherwise you end up braking and (as we all know and love) you loose the charm of “leg only” decisions about power. However it is an option to owners of typical frames we see on this site. Rarely we see a stray 10-speed or mountain bike posted and yes, its annoying and does not belong here. I think this is a reasonable exception. You may disagree.

The Good News: I put the old wheel back on and it is, once again, fixed and free. The Bad News: I just built a new bike around the wheel and will be posting pictures soon. I’m sure you all can’t wait.
