Yea this bike is cool. With that said, what is the obsession with retro bikes? It just seams like with every bike with a brooks seat and mustache handle bars gets kudos, while a bike with aerospokes gets slammed for being trendy. I like this bike because he carried the theme all the way through, pump, cages, and rack, well done. Don’t get me wrong I like a bike with clean lines, but I also like deep v, matching color, yea I spent a ton of $$$ on a wheelset so what, bikes too.
The obsession with retro bikes is paying homage to our bicycle heritage, the forgotten past, for trends come and gone, for that which has laid the groundwork for everything available and possible. They are our muses, our inspiration, the reason we still ride bicycles one hundred years later. Be trendy, that’s what our grandfathers and fathers did, buy the aerospokes and color matched grips, but don’t give in to the notion that converting vintage bikes is a temporary fad, and those who convert them will respect your style as well.
Wow, awesome bike! I love raleighs and this one looks like a great bike.
I think for me the vintage bikes are an opportunity to find something old and sometimes discarded and then to refurbish it and get it back in working order.
Also, there are so many vintage bikes that may have been base line or mid quality in their time that are completely solid dependable now compared to their modern counterparts, bikes that were built at a time when quality was more important than price point. I firmly believe (though its just my opinion) that products manufactured now are purposely built with a lower quality so that you use it for a while, it comes apart, and then you have to buy a new one. The sad thing is that we believe that that is normal and ok.
There’s a lot to be said for an old steel frame. Most of the bikes I ride are steel and almost all of them are older than I am and they’re still quality bikes. in 30, 40, 50 years they’ll still be running (hopefully) while the carbon fiber bikes built today will be coming apart.

Well done, my first road bike was a Raleigh Technium. Luftmensh I listen to NPR everyday and that sounds like something completly gay you would hear on All Things Considered. Kudos!
Older steel bikes are popular because they are more supple than modern aluminum/ titanium/ carbon fiber bikes. At least thats one of the reasons I love my old peugeot. It’s getting harder to find good quality lugged steel frames anymore without paying a fortune, so reconditioning an older bike makes the most economical sense seeing as those frames can last for 30 or 40 years no problem.
@ 2Fsy. Cheater owner? Are you mad that your bike’s not as cool? You saw this bike, wept a bit and took up Badminton instead. Nice bike Jason. Very slick.
I’m not sure how I should be feeling. Complimented I could be writing for NPR or offended that my prose is perceived as borderline gay. Whatever. Haha. I really dig this bike, more so after reading about it some and seeing the close ups and profile. The profile does it for me everytime, that moment of zen, when things went right. That’s for you, Eddie. Cheers.
This bike is classic, 592 votes and only 19 comments. What year was this bike manufactured:? Are the brake levers original ? Pretty much my Dream Machine.
I know!! These bars are stunning in profile. Like the love child of drop and moustache bars. I could see WWII Brits riding these with bolt action .303s over their shoulders. Cheers.
Love every little thing about this bike except those damn moto grips. I don’t get it! Some nice brooks leather washer grips would have toped it off for me. Super nice build though, enjoy it.
I just love this everytime I happen to come across it. Just beautiful. I like it with the mini-front rack as you have it here, Jason, as opposed to the pannier rack you have picts of online. How much restoration work did you have to do? The frame looks like its in tiptop shape.
Agree with the comments about the grips. Leather grips would really work a lot better with this build. Of course that’s nitpicking…no doubt this bike is one of the best on this site….but leather would seal the deal.
