My beater bike, a convert Raleigh Grand Prix. I got the Raleigh Grand Prix as a gift from my dad’s good friend, a retired English professor. It was a townie that had been sitting in his garage for +20 years, covered with gunk and dust.
I converted the bike easy. nothing special. I took off all the components to the bare essentials: the frameset, seatpost, bottom bracket and crankset.
I put on an Old Brooks seat (Team Professional i think) i found in the garage. i used the old drops i had on Serve Cold and used it for the beater. I bought a Swift Arriv wheelset and popped it on there. Took the braze-ons off and sanded a stripe of raw metal on them. Finished.
PS: attached on here is also a small update of my currant bike(i didnt want to do a seperate update of something of little significance) Cinelli Alter Stem and Cinelli Tempo Bars

Hola Wes, I am here looking. Is the 42 tooth chainring still on? I pulled mine off after settling on the 52. Some Raleigh used a rivet some bolts. You need some brasso for the Headbadge. How tall are you the bars are low but the saddle appears as though the clamp is moving the saddle forward, Ok if you must get closer to the bars. I move mine back for more space. If the drops are adjusted so the bottom line up with the top tube more parallel it looks more flowing. Outside pictures are better lite and more interesting as in your Serve Cold shots. You are lucky to find a Brooks Pro. laying around your garage. nice work so far. I will vote later. Thanks

I gave you a 10 ……… You built it after all you did not go out an order it. Congrats.

WSB: the 42 chainring is still on, for a decorative sense. Brasso is coming right up. I’m pretty short feller 5′5″. the seatpost i think i have on backwards but the seat is to the farthest back on the clamp. the drops are adjusted that way for a more…. comfortable grip. i mean, if i wanna go down on the drops, i don’t want to angle my hands 30 degrees down. Thank you.

OK, I know what you mean about the drops, they have to catch the hands in the proper part of the curve or it feels unstable. Function and feel rules. Thanks for not mounting a bottle opener off the saddle. Keep up the good work.

A sexy beater indeed. Good to see a conversion that hasn’t gotten splashed with gimmicks. I’d get a shorter stem if I were you.

A note on the update: stickers. The stem and bars look
sick, and I’m amazed you can actually reach it like that.

Dear Eric and your friend Sniper, does “beater bike” have any significance to you?
March 7th, 2010 @8:26 am

raleighs…they seem to just keep going and going, apart from the new seatpost on the $10 one I got it was all stock and original and rusty but everything worked fine, the history of raleigh is to me a good read and owning raleigh parts (mostly old and before thay went offshore)is more of the fact I have a nice piece of british cycle history rather than the value of it.ride with pride and who cares what people think
