I bought this 1970s Rabasa Derbi Spanish frame and converted it to a fixed gear, retaining some of the original parts and adding a modern touch with new wheels, cranks and seat. The original parts include, the alloy seat stem, head set and bars (Beleri France), and Olympic centre pull brakes. The wheel set is Star Circle deep V and I’m running a 52/17 ratio. the cranks are lasco, and the seat is a Selle Italis SLR.
I hardly know anything about the frame, so if anyone can tell me about it I’d be really appreciative!

nice oldie, shame about the wheels. 700s always look lost on older frames, good cruzer though.

Thanks sloman! I hadn’t really considered the aesthetic value of the 27inch vs the 700c but its a good point. I’ve got another frame I’m building up at present, and I’m going to re-use old wheels (a low budget being the primary motive). Now I’m excited to see how it complements the frame!

There’s something i always wonder when i see all white wheels…….what do they look like after they’ve been used for a while?

This would look better with box rims. Or possibly silver deep v’s. the b43 standard doesn’t work on all frames. After the rims, some honey leather may finish this off.

Box rims for sure. Some old Campy Ypsilons or Hardox.

funky frame and stem, but I would make changes to the drive train, wheels and saddle.

Are you serious? Frame and stem are the best part. Bright paint, intricate lugs, complex, vintage stem. Done right, this could be top ten. One option: black velocity aerohead, silver hubs, silver sugino 75, black concor, silver nitto risers with black champ grips. The frame is the feature attraction, and all this white detracts attention from it and sends it to the background. A modern build wasn’t the way to go.

Agreed, everything white should either be silver or black.

I am serious and we’re in total agreement on the frame ‘n stem.

Okay guys, I really appreciate the feedback. I’ve decided to build it the way I originally envisaged it, and build the white components on to the Malvern Star frame I picked up. Stay tuned for an update on both bikes!

Jimmy, I would love to see your non-funky frame and stem. Contrastly, I’ll post mine sometime soon.

yeahll!!!

I think JD meant funky in a positive way. Kinda old school slang like.

ya,good stuff,thanks for flashback man.

Thanks for the lug work run down, bob.
January 25th, 2012 @10:04 pm
Oh, dude. Funky doesn’t have a positive connotation anymore. Especially followed by the preposition “but.” But okay.

Gee,a cycleing expert AND a grammar-whiz too! Ain’t we lucky to have him, even though he hates to sound like an asshole LOL.
January 26th, 2012 @10:45 am
Let me run it down for you: ‘but’ generally indicates a change direction. So, if he didn’t like the drive train and wheelset, then he must have liked the frame and stem.

exactly.
