Found this bottom range Peugeot Premiere in a friend’s garage when I helped them move. Working on it as a beater/ general commuter/ pub run bike.
Keeping it cheap and cheerful for now, but I can see it getting expensive overall.
Current spec: Stock 21inch Peugeot basic frame with crap paint, chips and rust; Wheels/ Tyres: stock (I think), that took several hours to true up- Maillard hubs and unknown rims, Schwalbe 25c cheapo tyres; Crank/ Drive: Chromed steel 1-piece drive side off an old women’s Raleigh, 18t freewheel off old kid’s mtb, 1/8th chain; Bars/ Stem: stock as far as I know, chopped drops to mini bullhorns, but prefer downturned for position; Brakes: stock Weinmann side pulls, Sun levers with hoods cut off, BLB auxiliary brake; Saddle/ Seatpost: gel saddle that came with it, stock post probably; Rack and Bar tape- were on Wasp originally, but swapped onto this one.
I’m currently having The Wasp resprayed, so I’ve swapped the wheels on to this for now as I prefer fixed- could do with fixed on this too really. Also just running the BLB lever on the front while I use fixed, hence cable still there

what size is that stem(diam.)I just spent an Hour polishing an old cast alu quill for mongrel’s redo.went to put it on and it is like 7/8″.Its Compe’ brand so I’m thinkin it came off some old Froggy project in days of yore.love those old spring loaded racks.this is the kind of bike to convert.enjoy

I could have called this “polishing a turd”. It was awful when I found it- gear mech was bent and removed, had grips on the drops with v-brake levers, set up poorly and bent bars. Even after an hour with a lump hammer and a vice they’re still not right. I’m planning to fit bulls or pursuits when funds allow, and already got my eye on a fixed wheelset

Hours of endless tinkering ahead.

This is sort of bland at this point, the Wasp has more character to it. Are you changing the color of Wasp ? I liked the color. I also like the Pletscher rack, handy to have, I bought a small trunk which attaches with velcro fasteners. Keep on tinkering.

WSB, you’re right. This is pretty bland, so it makes a great canvas for a project. It’s ok weight wise, and it feels fairly small compared to Wasp.
Wasp is just being redone in same colours, as it looked like some jackass had leaned their bike against it and gouged my lovely paintjob

Paint from a rattle can is pretty soft compared to factory paint it seems. I sprayed a Twenty which was black when I got it and now red and it scratches easily but paint is cheap and it is fun when something is bland and can go nowhere but up in appearance. Hammerite ( U.K.) product I believe is not too bad as a paint and hides blemishes fairly well. Good luck.
May 17th, 2010 @5:11 pm
Yup, Hammerite is pretty tough, but the laquer i put on top reacted to it and weakened it a bit. The hammerite layer is still on Wasp, but I’ve stripped the laquer off and used several coats of high quality car primer & paint to redo it. Just about finished the lugwork today, just need to redo the wasp image and I’m painting WASP on the downtube, then it’s ready for about 10 coats of clear laquer over the top. Should stop any blemishes for a while.
I’m a touch disappointed actually, if I’d finished it sooner I could use it for a 10mile time trial tomorrow, that Al and I are planning to enter. I’ll have to adjust Pug for it and see what I can do (hopefully better than the 30mins I manages without trying). Cheers WSB

Do they limit the gearing for the time trial ? I read one account of a max. gain Dave somebody a Brit and he came to California and was a frame builder now retired after inhaling too much stuff. How is the lacquer ? nasty also no doubt. It is late now, cheers to you.

I’m not sure about gearing, Al might do though. We’re both planning on running 46/16 (works out about 75 inch gears, me on fixed and him on freewheel. I suspect most guys use gears and run about a 52/12 or higher in top anyway.
Laquer was fun- was feeling a touch high by the time I finished. Has a really nice smell too… ooh pretty colors

Aircraft Cleaner anyone? spray that on paint, reacts, and the paint peels off like a piece of paper.
May 17th, 2010 @5:59 pm
Aircraft Remover**** used for autos, but i have use for it for bicycles.

Woody; There is a group, I think they call themselves something like “The medium gear group” Something like, anyway. Who race on bikes geared between 65+72 inches, I think. There is a set of time trial records ect especially for this format. It’s an old thing, probably started by some die hards when deraillieurs were starting to gain popularity.
Kind of interesting in a purist sort of way. I quite like the “see how fast or how far, while placing restictions” type ideal. Something I noticed at Saturdays event. None of the riders carried kits or pumps like I used to 20 yrs ago.Probably got a tiny carbon mobile stashed down the seat tube for when it goes tits up and pear shaped. They all turned up in cars too. I used to ride out to events. Could be why my times were crap. Ha,ha.

cars to the event makes sense if they aren’t locals.Though I alwats felt guilty hauling MTB to the trailhead(25 miles away)then riding 15 miles in the woods to drive home later. But riding the Mudder 50 miles on top of the woods ride wasn’t gonna happen.LOL

Yeah it’s not pretty to look at but it’s French.

The “Butt Ugly Pug” (as I now call it) is slowly evolving.
Now has brand new randonneur style bars (cost just £5 from LBS) as the frame feels like it deserves drops; running Saccon drop brake levers (were on Wasp til I found new Shimanos for under £10 for it), and using the BLB mini lever as auxiliary for town riding; new Suntour crank with 44t ring and funky looking chainguard (that may stay on, or come off if I get bored); new, tiny, unbranded pedals with bonded clips and nylon straps.
Also hoping to replace tyres with Specialized All-Condition Armadillos fairly soon, as the current ones are shite, and hopefully I’ll be able to get a fixed/free wheelset in about a month.
When I’ve got my components, I’ll end up spraying it just to tidy the look.
What a project it’s turning into
May 27th, 2010 @4:42 pm
Sounds promising though. I’m dying for another project.

This build is slowly evolving- here’s how it is now: http://picasaweb.google.com/111099957858746906146/PUG#5479334269168898562 ; and http://picasaweb.google.com/111099957858746906146/PUG#5479334307088849922
I’m also working on an mtb frame as a possible fixie, but this is how it looks atm: http://picasaweb.google.com/111099957858746906146/Cudgel#5479334516419324834 , http://picasaweb.google.com/111099957858746906146/Cudgel#5479334473918605538 . I may leave it as geared, but haven’t decided yet

Sloman: i’ve only recently found out, the stem on this is a 7/8″. Turns out nearly every stem I have is the same, so I’ve swapped over the one on here to Wasp and vice versa, to make the cockpits a more equal size. I’ve spent a fair bit of time on Pug recently and it feels a bit squished compared to Wasp. Turns out the stem on here is 80mm and Wasp’s was 120mm, so a bit of a difference as Wasp is longer overall anyway. They feel better now
June 14th, 2010 @6:49 am
hahaha I’m glad to hear I’m not the only one caught out by the dreaded French stem plot.I hope you didn’t spend hours polishing it like I did.Watch out for odd bottom bracket and axle threads too.cheers.

saw one of these yesterday all original, cool bike.
July 14th, 2010 @11:44 am
this is probably how Red Bull Chile started.nice change.
July 14th, 2010 @1:10 pm
I think you could be right about that sloman.
Work has kind of stalled on this recently, except for the work mentioned above. Might repost but I’m not sure it’s worth it. I’m keeping this as a general beater/ commuter with the chipped paint job etc. The only recent change has been the MKS Sylvans from Wasp have been fitted to this, brand new 16t freewheel and… uhhh… that’s all.
I’ve just aquired an ’84 Raleigh Team Banana in stock form with reasonable paint. May well convert to single speed very soon or even fixed, as Alan is currently running gears and it means there’s a spare fixed wheel in the garage
July 14th, 2010 @1:24 pm
maybe keep Estaban’s paint tech in mind if you change colors in the future.great way to save the old decals(they are no readily available).cheers
July 15th, 2010 @2:20 am
The only thing I’d do to the frame is restore the original paintjob and decals. I reckon I can find a match for the decals using car accessory shops, or I may find a local print shop that would replicate the originals

it’s awesome
