1985 Nishiki “Sport” given to me by a friend. It was super heavy with mostly steel parts, had corroded/brittle spokes and was pretty rickety as a 12 speed. After conversion to single speed, bike weighs a manageable 24 pounds.
$pent about as much on parts as a complete brand new single speed would have cost me. Unfortunately, my closest communal workshop/LBS is 30 miles away, so I also had to buy all the specialized tools (even more reason for going with less expensive components).

Like all but the bars, seat post, and saddle. But I hear ya. Building on the cheap is tough. And tools are spendy. But DIY fills you with such pride.

thanks. I kinda agree with the saddle and bars, but, if I change anything, it’ll be the bar tape to black and maybe replace the brake cable and housing (they’re original/ancient).

I got a brand new charge bucket saddle for 30 bucks shipped. Used riser bars and drops on craigslist for less than a German 6-pack.

ahh, the old ulterior motive comment. I would say well played…if buckets weren’t going less online. I kinda like the looks of charge “spoon”, but the “bucket” looks too BMX. My favorite right now is the selle flight…but it’s too exp

Kashimax Aero, $165. Selle Italia Turbo, $50. Charge Bucket-compromise. “…if buckets weren’t going less online.” Did you mean go for less online? Because they aren’t. The “least” they’re going for is $22, not including shipping. Which is why I said 30 shipped. I’m an avid comparison shopper. If you can find a bucket for less than $30 I’ll be impressed. Is it a Turbo? No. But it’s better than nothing. I don’t get the bmx comparison. No bmx seat I ever had looked Turbo-inspired.
