Pretty bike, driveside photo would have been nice.
March 15th, 2011 @1:47 pm
The german tube protectors suck.
March 15th, 2011 @2:15 pm
I rock the german tube protector because thats where I learned to ride a bike. But thanks for the thought. You would think all the hours of smoothing the frame and paint would get noticed first.

All tube protectors suck…
March 16th, 2011 @4:48 am
if the only thing you don’t like is the tube pad then don’t put one on your bike.

thanks

DRIVE SIDE PHOTOS PLEASE.
i was liking the bike in the second shot but then i saw those horrendous purple pedals. black grips and normal black track pedals would look much nicer.
top tube pads are tacky. although ill admit to having one when i first started out.
is this fixed gear and no foot retention? its kind of mandatory to have foot retention if riding fixed. unless you only go 10 mph tops.
seriously, black grips and normal black track pedals with some foot retention and this is a sick build.
March 16th, 2011 @6:37 pm
I like the purple mountain bike / BMX pedals . Does everyone nedd foot retention for kicking around the neighborhood ? I don’t on my bikes. Have not fallen off the pedals yet in snow, rain or mud. Nice job , james. I like the paint closeup photo of the fork.
March 16th, 2011 @10:55 pm
No foot retention is ok if you have a front brake, but even then I dont see why someone wouldn’t throw some sort of straps on there. Maybe if they rode there bike to work in nice clothes and nice shoes but other than that.
March 17th, 2011 @5:12 am
Not sure why everyone can talk about my bike but I can’t respond so here is another try. If you don’t like tube pads then don’t rock them. If you love black grips buy them. And if you think you can only go 10mph without straps, well wanna race for money? As for those who want a drive side picture, I will load one if it lets me. Otherwise thanks for the comments that were positive or constructive. I built this bike for me and well I love it. Is it perfect, no, but it didn’t cost a ton or come in a box, so not perfect is fine by me. No worries, while you are hating I am out riding.

i thought it was just common sense to have foot retention with fixed gear. thats what allot of people seem to think, and i happen to agree with them. and trying to build a nice fixed gear bike for simply kicking around the neighborhood seems like a waste. going fast on a fixed gear bike without foot retention is just plain not safe, no matter how awesome you think your bike skills are. just my opinion.
March 17th, 2011 @2:06 pm
Haha “common sense” seems to be a paradox.
March 18th, 2011 @8:49 am
Is $500 cheap for converting a 1980 road bike to a fixed gear?!?
I was hoping to get away with under $200 for mine
By the way, the “before” photo makes the “after” photo look better. Good job…
March 18th, 2011 @3:47 pm
well, in terms of riding fixed gear, going beyond a certain speed in a certain gear ratio your pedals are going to be spinning quite fast, and that speed is not exactly that fast. if you are going downhill and your feet slip off its not going to be easy getting them back on, especially if you arn’t running a brake.
March 19th, 2011 @6:36 am
good luck on building something for $200, I am guessing you won’t be sitting on a brooks thats for sure. Well I have had enough fun listening to all the gabber so now is the time to tell you guys that this was the first day of assembly and no not all the parts were in so yes there is a brake and straps arriving tomorrow. but no there not black, illdthedj. This is my first road frame fixie bike and I love it. But man what a intresting crowd, I am begining to think that everyone thinks their bike is the best thing on earth and that unless you try and make yours look like theirs, you suck. For a style built around performance and individuality alot of the people on here don’t really seem to get it. But as long as your smiling while your riding who cares.

Nice resurrection. ’80s Schwinns are past my time, but this looks clean and purple pedals will make the bile snobs cringe!
March 21st, 2011 @1:45 am
Ok going back to my comment “All tube protectors suck”
Look at your bike, James.. Look at picture 5.. now look at picture 2. You’re going to tell me you think your whip looks better with that pad?
March 21st, 2011 @4:50 am
Thats the beauty, they come off! Either way I know I have a nice bike that I built myself. If I was building a bike for someone else I would take all this into consideration but I built this one for me so it doesn’t really matter.
March 21st, 2011 @10:57 am
@ james r. Hey just a suggestion you might want to consider. Since this is a conversion and the bottom bracket is lower, pedal strike is a good possibility. Big platform pedals like yours add to that risk. I’ve been using MKS GR-9 pedals and love them. They’re smaller platforms with a really short spindle length. I wear an 11.5 shoe and they fit me fine…just to give you an idea.
March 21st, 2011 @11:11 am
I am with you ng, I am considering ordering a pair of mks gr9 silver or copper pedals on pay day. I tried to build this ride within a certain budget. As time goes by that isn’t such a concern. But yeah right now if your not careful you can catch a toe. Thank god I went with a shorter crankset. A 27 inch wheel schwinn is not the easiest frame to work with but so far so good.

sounds like you have things under control.Folks here aren’t haters for the most part but are strongly opinionated so enjoy.
September 6th, 2011 @1:49 pm
james r you got so offended by everyone. One the one hand, good job putting some elbow grease into something you’re hopefully going to use every day. Still you sounded like a total pussy being so defensive. Top tube protectors are fucking lame, and no foot retention or even a front brake is fucking stupid you obviously went and bought straps immediately after homies were bashing you for that. Sorry to resurrect this but at first I was going to compliment you on how much you cleaned that old piece of shit up but then saw that you’re a total douche.
October 3rd, 2011 @1:27 pm
hey “deathtopigs”, you can keep your compliment and shove them up your ass. If you think I am offended by comments then your wrong, I do ride my bike daily and love it and have yet to shed a tear due to some internet tuff guys opinions. I did slap on a front brake and never did put on my straps. And no I never got “bashed by my homies”, you sound like some sort of NWA rip off trying to be cool. Do you wear straps when you and your “homies” go fuck with the police. What a tool you are. I am not offended by you as a bike owner but as a person. Don’t be sorry for “resurrecting” my bike. I think everyone will see that your a douche and I am the guys smiling and riding. good luck in life you fucking poser! and if you ever want to hit me up I am in Jacksonville Beach and will show you how to ride.

nice. beautiful paint.the style of the grips and the top tube pad dont do the build justice- they distract from it as a cohesive whole.
