The experience
March 25th, 2010 @6:32 pm
Way to Go Luftie, very nice. That must be the biggest frame Raleigh makes. I just received a 62 cm. cc. to top of seat tube Raleigh Competition frame from Holland. I like your colors very much. Brakes your legs you must have steel muscles. 52/17 on the hills you better wear a hardhat and go easy. I have 52/18 on a Raleigh with 630 rims and 32 mm tires for a big circumference and like my brakes front and rear. Nice ride and nice photo setting as well.
March 25th, 2010 @10:26 pm
Thanks for the comments guys. Yeah it’s quite dangerous without the brakes. That’s why I’ve been only doing night rides so there’s no traffic and I don’t have to stop for red lights. It’s an intense uphill battle but it’s all speed down the other half.
March 25th, 2010 @10:33 pm
Love the raleighs. Man that’s a tall bike. Is this raleigh from the english builds or the american? My main commuter is an american raleigh marathon and my cruiser is an english raleigh sprite 27. I love them both to death. Great bike.
March 26th, 2010 @1:13 am
Nice looking bike. I always found bare bars a bit chilly in winter though. What’s this “NOT STOPPING FOR RED LIGHTS”?
I’d be shouting in your ear when I caught you up if I saw you do that. Sorry mate, but if you use the road, you obey the rules. Bikers get a bad press as it is without being wilfully reckless. Still, nice bike.
March 26th, 2010 @5:23 am
Love it. There is something special about the classic road bike that can’t be found in the latest and greatest carbon everything.
March 26th, 2010 @5:41 am
Built in England
March 26th, 2010 @6:11 am
@ Alan. When you’re doing twenty five downhill at 52-17 without a brake it’s a little hard to brake for a no-warning red light, and why go through the trouble at eleven pm on the vacant streets of the retail district, where most buildings are for lease and people go to bed at 9pm. Yell all you want because I’ll be out of sight and rounding the next block. In daytime I’ll be the proper gentleman and signal my turns but when the night comes out its free ride.
March 26th, 2010 @6:32 am
It would almost feel like an airplane stopping over Cinncinnati and Detroit. A fixie in flight on a magical nite : to stop for a ghost of a lite? not quite!
March 26th, 2010 @6:44 am
wsb? what kind of awesome herb do you smoke?
March 26th, 2010 @7:09 am
For all your critisim expected something better. Just saying.
March 26th, 2010 @8:15 am
Luftmensh, is this all the hype you build up for yourself after critiquing everyone about how their bikes look? I was expecting something more from you, man… Sure, nice parts and all but this is just like any other bike out there… Then again, it’s not how the bike functions, it’s how the cyclist rides. Cheers, MANE!
Love,
Douche McFarlen
March 26th, 2010 @9:31 am
Douche: this is a conversion, not my personal ride, and this barely lives up to my own standards because it was for the most part a budget build. It’s got stock wheels from my Giant, cheap tires, cheap nylon straps, the stock pedals and clips, no name bars with a rust spot the seller neglected to mention, and the once chromed fork is rusted out. Considering this, and the campagnolo, i think it does quite well. So no, this doesn’t match “all the hype I built up for myself,” douche. My personal build will be up in about two weeks so you can rip it apart then.
March 26th, 2010 @11:08 am
looking forward to it, buddy!
March 26th, 2010 @11:17 am
Spokely, I took two hits off a brother in law’s unknown self made smoke about 30 years ago and have been high ever since. once is enough , drink a beer each day to counteract the puffs 30 years ago purely for medicinal reasons to maintain what little sanity I have left. Thanks
March 26th, 2010 @11:29 am
running reds at night, brakeless, going way too fast!getting old sucks-thank God we seldom grow up.way to go,enjoy and ride fast and hard.
March 26th, 2010 @12:14 pm
Haha. Thanks sloman.
March 26th, 2010 @10:52 pm
@ douche, gary. What’re your rides, then?
March 27th, 2010 @6:53 am
Sloman has an Excellent Point, to ride a bike is liberating, healthy and makes you feel ageless. It is a crappy day if I can’t ride a little way. It is much like the birds in flight, they don’t always take the direct route they swoop and swing and stretch their wings as we do zipping here and there from street to sidewalk and whereever the path is clear.
March 27th, 2010 @11:26 am
Exactly. Beautiful chaos.
March 27th, 2010 @4:44 pm
Looks like those cosmetic blemishes might affect your sprints, especially on those MX trails!
March 28th, 2010 @11:08 am
Looks clean, I like it….
March 28th, 2010 @11:27 am
Any suggestions on rust removal? I’ve been using wd40 and aluminum foil but it’s been incredibly tedious.
March 28th, 2010 @1:40 pm
dont even bother with the wd40, pick yourself up some naval jelly. be careful with it, wear gloves. brush it on. 15 minutes later wash it off. voila! nice ride, and i wouldnt stop for lights that late either
March 28th, 2010 @2:53 pm
For rust I use steel wool and a Paste wax (Johnson’s wood type) and use a packaging lite cotton cord on the rims and spokes to rub it down. Most of the ugly brown rust comes off but the pitting of course is still there but looks much better.
March 28th, 2010 @3:21 pm
Naval jelly. Is that a home depot thing? Thanks guys I’ll check it out.
March 29th, 2010 @11:46 pm
I’ve heard of navel fluff, but I think you have to supply your own. Ha,ha. Sorry guys. I amuse myself too easily. The onset of old age and my much expected dementia showing itself.
Luftie, are you from thee states? Just your mention of “retail district” had a sort of colonial feel to my foggy British sensibilities.
When I was in my 20s, and still living in London I used to go out with some mates from the bike club and enjoy the virtually deserted streets of the square mile. Nothing but road sweepers, tramps and drunken bankers to avoid during our ad-hoc criteriums. Ah, great days indeed. Time and 2 marriages have put paid to a lot of that kind of nonsense. Luckily I am starting to recapture some of the spirit riding out with my stepson, Mikey and his bike, the Wasp.
Sorry the comment got a bit long. I think rust can look good polished up. What they call a patina of age.

Alan, you would appreciate the polished rust on my 1960 Phillips Tandem with rod brakes, single speed and dyno front hub. it had leather saddles with three springs that had dried out to the point I could rip them like cardboard. the lower part of the frame has peeling paint and polished rust. The chrome bars are not bad and the bell is original about 2 1/2 inches across. has some Apollo decals also. British racing green all faded to a darker color. Would you know if Brooks releathers saddles? I have a B72 that needs help, frame is chromed and excellent. Thanks and the tandem is the only bike my wife will get on, can’t figure out women!
April 1st, 2010 @5:58 am
Luftmensh, did the chainwheels bolt together in 1979 or did you drill them out to get the 52 ? my 70′s Raleigh Record made in England had the press fit 52 onto the crank and rivets attaching the 42 . it also has cottered crank not the square tapering cotterless. Thanks
April 1st, 2010 @6:12 am
Yes they were bolted together. I was going to use the 42 but the 52 was part of the one piece crank.
April 5th, 2010 @9:17 pm
Luftmensh, did you lower the saddle and reattach the front brake after the photo to keep it Real? I hope so unless this is track only.
April 6th, 2010 @7:10 am
I am looking at this picture of your bike you submitted to this site and even though it is a simple process, low and behold you messed it up. Hate to ride your bike you build because if you can’t even do a simple thing like submit pictures – you needed two tries you moron – the quality of your bike has to be atrocious. Based upon this bike, you have absolutely no basis to critique anybody’s bike on this site, I mean anybody’s bike, especially that Gabriel from Media. Are you kidding? My 12 year old son could build a better bike. Seems to me the only thing you can do is run your mouth criticize other people, but you need help to do your own. My advice to you: ask Gabriel, he will do it right.
April 11th, 2010 @12:23 am
Go fuck yourself, John Thompson. Who the fuck are you or your 12 year old son? Jesus. Excuse me for building a budget bike. Did I mention this was my first complete build? And how many times do I have to say this isn’t my personal ride before it gets through your thick skull? And having never submitted to this gallery, because all are different, I was unaware of the size limitations on pictures. Moron? Fuck you. What do you ride? You wanna call me out then lay out your cards old man cuz I ain’t bluffin.
April 11th, 2010 @12:25 am
WSB: Yes I lowered the seat. There’s no brake. Yes I preach front brakes but I have no $$ and this isn’t sticking around so there you have it.
April 11th, 2010 @12:47 am
Luftie! You’re back. Just been reading “cheap but bling” Oh I cried with laughter, litrally. I got given a stem yesterday. A propper one off a cheap Raleigh racer. It’s on the bike now. You may admire it when the pics I submitted pop up here. I like this putting bikes together on a shoestring lark. It is amazing what you can get away with when you go into a real old style bike shop and say “Have you got any old bits you can’t sell” The “Wasp” got a new stem too.Tubular steel construct.V.light+brand new. 6 of our English pounds. What’s that in Colonial? About 10 bucks, maybe. I’m not up on exchange rates. Gotta wake the wasp keeper soon or ther’ll be no time for a spin in the lanes before we have to present ourselves for a meal out in town.Bless his Mum. She’s having to work today. Keep you eyes peeled on here for my single speed ATB coming soon.It was a very quick build with bits from the garage and the use of an angle grinder. It’s not tidy! Expecting some genuine vitriol and eloquence from you. Don’t let me down. Cheers mate!
April 11th, 2010 @8:19 am
I’ll do my best Alan. I’m coming to find just how much crap you get for building cheap. I figure anything ain’t bad on a zero dollar budget.
April 11th, 2010 @8:37 am
Look out for “As bad as it looks” I’ve submitted it. Just have to wait for it to go through the proccesses. It could be an interesting ride when I spend some real time on it.
April 11th, 2010 @5:48 pm
love the simple bikes with simple paint. nice mate. ive seen a 68cm raleigh when i bought my 66cm schwinn frame “hansel/gretel” too big for me even…
April 12th, 2010 @8:07 am
Hey Luftmensh, just as I thought. Finally someone calls you out and critics your bike and look at the low life, trailer trash response you have. Coursing and using this crap language just because someone did not like your way below average bike. How should all the people respond to you, all those people you have been talking down to and hassle and pester, acting like you are a pro? This is your first finished bike?????? The only thing you can do is talk, but you can’t do the walk. You had been badgering almost everyone’s bike on this site with your dumb ass critique and with your vile and derogatory comments and acting like you know everything and we find out you have only built one bike!!! Just like I said, you have absolutely, absolutely no basis to critique anybody’s bike on this site you wonna be. You are below amateur. My advice to you again, is email Gabriel and beg him to help you to build a nice bike……… “Cuz I ain’t bluffing” Looser.
April 12th, 2010 @9:17 am
OK and can we all be civil now. Interesting how a bike takes a long time to get posted but the comments are immediate. My battery is charging for the camera and maybe the wife can show me how to post pictures after I put aside my bike tools. I am a slow learner sometimes. Luftie where did you pick up the nice Raleigh bike ? It should be easy enough to pick up a center pull caliper at the local Bike shop or salvage yard ? This site needs a bike swap/exchange also . Gabriel and his friend Johnnie have lots of parts I would think.
April 12th, 2010 @9:26 am
I like this- it’s a nice clean conversion.
The chrome stem and bars look great with the light paint, and I like the lugs on the frame.
As for rust removal, a disc wire brush bolted to either an angle grinder or power drill worked wonders on The Wasp. The metal is still quite pitted but Hammerite Smoothite sorted it out. I’m still planning a powdercoat or enamelling job for it, when i can afford to.
Cheers Luftie
April 12th, 2010 @9:55 am
Hey John Thompson.. I thought you might find this interesting. For your convenience I’ve copied the “About” section of this website for you. It’s actually right up there to the right of every single bike posted.
Fixed Gear bikes – Showcase your beloved Fixed Gear or Single Speed bike to the world and find out what the world thinks. Browse other people’s bikes and pass judgment on them like the fixie connoisseur you know you are.
So… it seems between the right to “freedom of speech”
The right to freedom of speech is recognized as a human right under Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and recognized in international human rights law in the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR). The ICCPR recognizes the right to freedom of speech as “the right to hold opinions without interference. Everyone shall have the right to freedom of expression”.[1][2] Furthermore freedom of speech is recognized in European, inter-American and African regional human rights law). And the “About” section of this website, Luft hasn’t done anything wrong. And by the way…Some of my photos never uploaded either. So I guess I’m a moron too.
April 12th, 2010 @10:06 am
John Thompson: My first COMPLETE build. I’ve worked on other bikes but didn’t know how to do all of the labor or didn’t have the tools. French Graffiti was my one of my other partial builds. And my basis for critique is as equal as anyone else here. That’s why it’s opinionated. I don’t mind critique on my bike but obviously I’ll get upset when you call me a moron on the basis that I don’t know how to use a computer, and therefore I don’t know how to build a bike. So go ahead and keep ripping this apart because this bike means little to me by comparison, because it isn’t my pride and joy. Once again I ask, if you can build something better than where is it? Or do you build bikes at all? Because I want to know your basis of argument other than your not liking me. And please stop with the Gabe comparisons. Few people can attain such lows, and when you see my piece de resistence, even if it’s not to your taste (whatever that is), you’ll drop that Gabe comparison like a bad habit. So I’ll do my best to post my baby in the next few days and you can try to say something bad about it, but without any proof that you even own a bike your opinion is completely, completely worthless to me. Cheers.
April 12th, 2010 @10:13 am
+1000 to ng. Thanks bro.
April 12th, 2010 @11:25 am
The only four letter word beginning with F should be FORK on this cool and calm site. Computers have longer memories than my X
April 12th, 2010 @11:25 am
can’t wait to see your real bike.this is a nice”conversion, but.I know it will be a real cracker.enjoy.
April 12th, 2010 @11:27 am
WSB-how about FREE?thats one of my favorites!
April 12th, 2010 @11:36 am
Sloman, free is always good. After paying for 12 or so bikes a Friend gave me two 70′s Huffy s 3 speed Shimano hubs and some nice parts, diacompe brakes steel chomed drops, The biks were seldom used and rust free but heavy beasts with fenders etc. I stripped the lady’s and tossed it on the curb. Wonderful Snipertoe like one piece cranks . I should go fixed with the man’s bike and compete with Snipertoe for the most comments and insult everyone’s heritage and orientation. Luftie did you sell Raleigh Tall boy yet and do you want a brake lever and caliper. (Not spray painted, alloy naked )
April 12th, 2010 @12:04 pm
love the “insult heritage ect “thought?just be careful, some of my most expensive projects started off as free(cars, boats,)cheers
April 12th, 2010 @12:53 pm
Don’t even respond to the guy lutfsmensh. People don’t want to hear actual opinions most of the time, they just want a pat on the head. More people need to learn how to take criticism (constructive or not) about themselves or things they see as symbolizing who they are. A negative opinion about a person doesn’t actually change who they really are so why would it matter? While I don’t agree with a lot of your opinions on bikes, and I’m not all that wild about how you state your opinion a lot of times, its still your opinion so state away! You don’t have anything to prove to anyone, no one here does.
April 12th, 2010 @1:20 pm
Um, thanks? Haha. I’ll try to be more calm with my next posted bike.
WSB: haven’t sold it yet. Would like a brake but I am broke and my bike budget is zilch for the next two years.
April 12th, 2010 @3:07 pm
NG, Luftie,Sloman,WSB..Utmost respect to your thoughtful and intelligent outlook. I feel at home here. I think I’m a thicko from Hackney.(Kinda the Bronx of London, ish) but I’m living near Cambridge(one of the worlds great centres of learning) and use words half my workmates can’t understand. As for talking to the locals,, especially anyone under 25, forget it! Keep the wheels turning guys.
April 12th, 2010 @3:43 pm
Luftie, I can take a center pull off my freebie Huffy , I think it is diacompe and will fit your Raleigh. a Freebie for this site’s most active (if somewhat Caustic at times) critiquemeister ! How to get address and stay anonymous is ?
April 13th, 2010 @12:17 am
That sounds fantastic WSB. Send me an email at mopar496@hotmail.com. Cheers.
Alan, you’re one of us. “one of us, one of us.”
April 13th, 2010 @4:45 am
I don’t necessarily think that was something to say thank you to, I was just stating a fact. It was less in defense about the comments you leave and more in defense of your right to leave them.
April 13th, 2010 @6:23 am
We must think of a person’s bike (bought or built) as if it is their Mother or Sister and go light and sensitive on the comments. But it is fun to be sarcastic sometimes. (Just ask my wife/ both of them) I take off on my bike when it get too uncomfortable around here. Good way to Cool Off. Too bad the Priest and the Minister at church don’t ride they are ALL Obese. Catholic or Protestant alike. Fixed gear or freewheel would help them out for sure not the Elevator of Dairy Queen. ramble on and on.
April 13th, 2010 @8:25 am
Hey WSB I forgot to mention I bought a sixer of negra modelo, now that’s a tasty beverage. Would that be considered a porter? It’s dark but thin unlike stouts.
April 13th, 2010 @9:30 am
I love beer…This is what Wiki says.
Negra Modelo
Negra Modelo is a 5.4% abv Munich-style beer first brewed in Mexico by Austrian immigrants, and was introduced as a draft beer in 1926.
April 13th, 2010 @11:41 am
I like Negra Modelo. the Porters I have had are usually more bitter than Negra Modelo. Too much hops for my taste as is Beck’s which I used to like. Sometimes the expensive brews are too long on the shelf. Pilsner Urquell is usually good if fresh enough. About the brake , I was wrong it is a side pull steel chromed and made in Japan in good shape and the lever is a 22 mm. which fits on the 70′s size bars. white cable, let me know. It is easier side pull because the center pull needs the gizmo off the stem and some stems interfer with the straight shot down to the center of the caliper. I measured it and it should fit on both the 630 or 622 rim. 27′s are 630 as you know. your 79 is probably the 630 (27) let me know if you want it.
April 13th, 2010 @12:02 pm
Ng,sloman, lufie, wsb,Alan flint are so disrespectful to others & when they are being question about there lack of a nice build they flip out like there’s no tomorrow. I am new to this site and I am already turned off.. Not good! Cheers!
April 13th, 2010 @1:25 pm
@Raleigh Power. We’re disrespectful of others? Really? Are you sure you understand the difference between criticism and disrespect? Because they’re two very different things. Have you read the “about” section of this site? It kind of sums up what it’s all about. The funny thing is you’ve actually singled out a handful of people that actually have intelligent, humorous, insightful and witty things to say.
April 13th, 2010 @1:35 pm
Those” handful” of people are the only ones that reply to every post on here. I am not going to bother with you guys because it seems like you guys don’t get the point. Cheers! Ride hard…,
April 13th, 2010 @1:37 pm
flipant perhaps, personally disraspecful no.this is a place where all and sundry share opinions, good or bad.i think i have a good build(again-my opinion).it works for me in my world.it will get changed around as time goes by and when it does i’ll subject myself to the abuse, listening for nuggets and ideas.i don’t recall anyone flipping out(maybe some baiting the trolls).opinions are like tittys.everyone has ‘em but some ars ugly as hell.how do you define a “nice build”.one where you cruise around town high in the risers that the LBS put on your Leader.whilst allyour bud dudes tell you how cool that whip is?Or out at dawn, down in the drops, trying to pass the local velo club, chipped frame be damned?sorry if i offended you.one more time,it’s my opinion only.
April 13th, 2010 @1:57 pm
Mr? Power. Why hide behind your pen name? We try to be humourous about many things on here. I think the people you single out, myself included, do not take themselves too seriously, but do have a lot of cycling knowledge. We do tend to rip it out of anyone too precious. Why? Because we can. We invite insightful and intelligent comebacks with all our comments. Education doesn’t stop at the school gates. We learn and teach ourselves and others daily. Come join the class and pay attention. I may be asking questions after.
Now, does anyone find that disrespectfull or unaccurate. C’mon, I can take it. I got a new box of Kleenex to wipe my eyes with.
April 13th, 2010 @1:59 pm
Do you consider “Fuck You” and “You are a piece of shit” and “I hope you die” and a few other disrespectful, despicable, abominable and depraved comments intelligent, humorous, insightful and witty? Maybe you should look up so you can understand the difference between criticism and disrespect!! I never said anything about Freedom of Speech and all that and you can copy all day long the ABOUT section of this website. It just shows your ignorance and stupidity and it jut shows the fact that you have absolutely no clue about the issue. You can not come up with one instant where I said anything about you can not post. You can not show me one time where I said that. This is America, it is a free country and you can post all you want. However nowhere in the about section of this website tells you that you can use those disrespectful, despicable, abominable and depraved comments to the other people posting on this site. Yes there is a big difference between criticism and disrespect. Especially when you post with a condescending, arrogant, snobbish “I know it all” and “I am better than you” style and then we find out it is all without merit and all without basis. Look what happened when one of you got criticized about his bike, just look at the words!! NG, CS, WOODEN SHOE BIKER AND A FEW OTHERS PARTICULARLY SLOMAN, LUFTMENSH AND KUMAI, you people turned this great site into a low class, trashy site. It is very sad and you all should be ashamed of yourselves.
April 13th, 2010 @2:13 pm
WOW! John Thompson, you’re taking this website way too seriously.
April 13th, 2010 @2:13 pm
Dear John, you have a point and I agree we should keep it clean and polite. These comments are not always stuff you would post in the church bulletin. I am surprised you retype some of the worst. NG is always respectful from what I read, sloman also very cool and enjoyable etc. CS is very knowlegeable and Alan has a great humor. Is there another site ? Old Bike blog is no longer. Old Ten Speed is very polite but stuck on one topic and not fixed yet. Have a pleasant day.
April 13th, 2010 @2:30 pm
Dear J.T. I am very sorry if I have offended you in any way. Please feel free to visit “As Bad As It Gets” and work out all the angst you feel. This is a genuine appology. I do have a very flippant nature and I lean towards word play, a lot. I am also an optimist and tend to tune out a lot of negative that conflicts with my oppinion. Self analysis can be so healing. discuss?
Cheers mate, look for the humour in life.
April 13th, 2010 @2:48 pm
Alan, you must take out the extra pee from apology !
April 13th, 2010 @3:18 pm
I thought I was taking enough pee as it was?
April 13th, 2010 @5:15 pm
No, SHIT !
April 13th, 2010 @5:25 pm
Yes shit. Who needs Facebook. This is WAY better. And no one gets thier knobs out on the pics either. So many points of view and such a depth of experience from everyone.I’m learning about all the new stuff and getting to re-learn a lot of the old stuff. I’ve even got back in touch with my old club. Could be a mid life crisis, but I’m liking it.
It’s 01.30 here in the U.K. I better beat it.
Thanks Woody for all the comments. Pass that on to Luftie and the usual suspect too. Night!
April 13th, 2010 @5:50 pm
Mid life Crisis Lasts Decades from my experience if you let it. Ride on and be happy. Illegitimus non tatum Carborundum.
April 13th, 2010 @6:18 pm
ya all google Pedal Room.great site buy not fixie specific.some velopulois velos fellows.enjoy
April 13th, 2010 @7:24 pm
I’ll try to clean my mouth out with soap but I can’t hold my tongue when comments are made like John Thompson’s “Hate to ride your bike you build because if you can’t even do a simple thing like submit pictures – you needed two tries you moron – the quality of your bike has to be atrocious.” Now that just isn’t constructive criticism about the bike. Once again, where’s his bike?
Raleigh Power: how many posts have you seen on here? Granted, I’ve ripped on some pretty badly, but on every post are thoughtful and comical comments which make it worth trudging through the harsher ones.
I’ve submitted my personal ride, The Tank, so go at it. Cheers.
April 15th, 2010 @12:19 am
Looking forward to seeing the Tank. As Woody says. Don’t let the bastards grind you down. WSB; Just a wierd thing for you. The 1st person I ever heard using that cod latin phrase was,,, Dick Morris. How strange is that? Luftie; Glad I’m not the only one without buckets of cash to throw at the thing I want. We are brothers of of the begged bike bits type. Don’t mean we don’t know style or grace when we see it. Happy biking every one. I have work to do.
April 15th, 2010 @4:11 am
Wow! This bike is so plain and ugly. Better luck on the 2nd build. Ha!
April 15th, 2010 @10:32 pm
Where’s your extravagant beauty Deep V? Oh wait, sorry I
forgot, your mom just started letting you use the internet so owning a bicycle is a responsibility you’re just not ready for. She says hi by the way.
April 15th, 2010 @11:11 pm
She did my ironing last week too. Just my shorts though. Nice lady. To have a son turn out like that, eh? I don’t know. You do your best for them, ect, ect. Ha,ha.
April 16th, 2010 @3:57 am
Wow! Your such an adult! Great come back…. Just build a better bike then this junk you posted. Alan, stop wearing your Grandmothers purple socks….Cheers!
April 16th, 2010 @4:12 am
It’s so true with the above comments, You & Alan talk the whole world of shit about other builds here but you lame fucks don’t have nice bikes to back it up.
April 16th, 2010 @5:23 am
Real men of steel, twits of carbon. What’s not to like about Raleigh. Honor your grandfather’s ride. Toto el mundo es illiegtimus creo. Vayo con dios mariconyoh.
April 16th, 2010 @6:21 am
You apparently can’t read DeepV because I’ve said it ten thousand times on this post. This was my budget build, and I’ve submitted my personal ride, The Tank, which should be up anyway day now.
I’m assuming you probably don’t have a bike at all, like John Thomson, and like to trash talk those who do just for the sake of being an a-hole. We may
not all have Bianchi Pista’s but we at least have bikes we’ve built ourselves, which is more than I can say for you up to this point. So if you want to gain any credibility I suggest you post your “masterpiece” or tell us which is yours and I’ll consider taking you seriously.
Cheers.
April 16th, 2010 @7:11 am
To all: I have not slogged through this entire thread but I see JT’s point. I used to be a regular on here as CS would recall. I left because it was a place to “fight” online. I get constructive criticism and I find it very helpful but when we resort to comparing the escapades we have had with each others mother’s in relation to our bikes it just doesn’t work. Sure I’m all for ribbing someone on a bad bike, heck my bike is one of the worst rated Raleighs on this site. But I built it myself and love the heck out of it. I’m not saying we have to be all touchy feely and polish each others domes but when I came back to visit this forum after a long hiatus I was immediately lambasted by Lufty here for saying I liked something on someone’s bike. SOOO I have only been lurking as of late.
Why don’t we get back to the point of this site THE RIDES, not a penis measuring contest.
And just to get the ball rolling I will go ahead and start the criticism of this post with a preemptive statement:
Yes, I found your shoes at the foot of my mom’s bed this morning as I was about to move out of her basement. I am only moving out because I was offered a job as a small dick model. Yes, I’m hung like a tic-tack.
and then the proverbial “cheers mate”
April 16th, 2010 @7:41 am
scozzy + 1. I’m all for opinions and criticism about bikes, but yeah, the trash talk that has nothing to do with bikes or opinions or anything really is pointless.
April 16th, 2010 @8:37 am
Well said Scozzy! I was just stating my opinion and luftmensh get’s all crazy with me! I guess he should take time to read his own pervious comments on others post and realize how dumb he acts… Well anyways! I’m Looking for on seeing your “new project” hopefully it doesn’t look like this one. Cheers!
April 16th, 2010 @8:38 am
Tell me about it. I don’t want to resort to petty namecalling but these yahoos bring out the worst in me. Even in all my snobbish criticism do I rarely or outrightly try to attack the rider. That’s when it gets messy.
April 16th, 2010 @9:51 am
Some innovative bikes and insults here. Scozzy has a point as does JT . Be civil , someone may save this stuff forever and it may bite you.
April 16th, 2010 @12:00 pm
I feel we have had a break through. Lets all have a group hug. While in the circle, kick directly in front and try to catch someone in the sack.
ok….
Luft: I dig the bike. I’m a Raleigh fan. I don’t exactly know why. I have a 67 Record SS and a 08 Mojave mountain bike. I guess I like the “heritage”.
April 16th, 2010 @1:21 pm
koombyya.
April 16th, 2010 @1:50 pm
I feel an inner peace. Maybe it’s the caffeine.
Thanks scoz.
April 16th, 2010 @2:06 pm
As a friend once told me, be a Mentsh ( mensch ) and everyone will love you.
April 16th, 2010 @3:05 pm
I agree. Apparently some people on this Earth got the memo with a spelling error that read “douche” instead of “mentsh”.
Shalom.
April 16th, 2010 @3:18 pm
Wait, what?
April 16th, 2010 @3:24 pm
Ah, I feel the bonding begining. It is after all about the bikes, and hoe they make YOU feel. Only you will know if your bike isn’t set up right. Just looking at a bike won’t tell us anything coz we are all different shapes and sizes. That is the beauty of “the bike” as a concept. Different people can ride the same frame just by changing the stem and moving the saddle. Me+and MJ are about the same hieght, but I’ve got a shorter back than him, longer legs and arms I borrowed from a gibbon. His set up won’t suit me, but I can move the saddle up or down+play with the bars. Hey presto! Comfy again. At the end of the day(uk football cliche’) We are all bikers(not sure about slimycameltoe) So the enemy is the boys in tin boxes, the weather+our own limitations. Mine grow daily, by the way. Love the way you guys chuck up subjects on here.Me and MJ were trying to yhink of a way to fit film quotes in our comments. Any one know the joke about Luke Skywalker having trouble with chopsticks? We thought we could corrupt the punchline if Luftie ever has headset trouble.
April 16th, 2010 @4:57 pm
Luftie. gotta get this bike to the top of one pile or the other. I like it’s honesty. It hasn’t just come out of the shop. It’s had a life and is still going. Keep it up. Maybe if we get it to the top of this list you can use that as a selling gambit and ask more for it when you sell.
April 16th, 2010 @5:43 pm
Nicely said Alan. I’m trying to sell it tonight so wish me luck. It deserves more than the spot beside my bookcase, even in it’s “current state.”
April 16th, 2010 @5:53 pm
Good luck mate. Good to know ya. I gotta sleep. Got my 12 yr old son for the weekend. “Mistakes, I’ve made a few. ect) Hope you escape the traps laid out before you were born. Let us know if you get free of the bike. Still waiting on the tank. Think there are lots in the wings. Nite, nite. It’s nearly 2am here.
April 16th, 2010 @5:53 pm
Campagnolo parts don’t come cheap. A seat tube recently went for $91 on ebay it was in Holland. I bought the frame for a little more than that but shipping was 70 and frame only with Shimano headset and tange bb (no campy parts on it other than the name near the spot derailer used to hang from on the right chain stay) Good luck with the sale.
April 19th, 2010 @11:58 pm
had a guy flake out but another one’s coming tomorrow at noon. please take my bike.
April 20th, 2010 @1:04 am
You could try punting it round any basketball games out your way. Lots of tall guys who may need a big bike there I would guess. Gotta go where the market is. Wouldn’t do to advertise it in “Dwarf Weekly” is what I’m saying.
April 20th, 2010 @5:54 am
“Dwarf Weekly” Those were the days. I ended my subscription because I found the articles were always too short.
April 20th, 2010 @6:50 am
Ha,ha,ha! Damn Scozzy! You are as daft as me. At 5′ 6.5″ I’ve been accused of being a lawn ornament loads of times, but I can kick the top of a door frame still. That tends to make the 6 footers pause. Now where did I leave my fishing rod+red pointy hat?
April 20th, 2010 @3:51 pm
Lawn Ornament bids you all goodnight. Had a fun day playing bikes. Work tomorrow. Cheers and play nice.
April 20th, 2010 @7:04 pm
The gentle giant took it for a spin. Will consult giant wife. Hope to hear tomorrow. Cheers.
April 22nd, 2010 @9:45 am
I’d keep this thing and make it nice if it were 4 or 5cm’s shorter. Oh well. Next build.
April 22nd, 2010 @10:47 am
Ask Gentle Giant if wife consults when she buys shoes. Sounds like a way of saying probably not going to buy. Pour him a whiskey and shoot him a low price cash only, but take off the $Campagnolo parts first. If you have a 20 cog put it on so he flies off the line and figures the bike is real light and fast.
April 22nd, 2010 @2:41 pm
Yeah that guy didn’t get back to me, surprise. As if you go look at a bike without cash in your wallet. Another guy, a kid I’m guessing, asked me if it’s barspinnable. What do you even say to that? It has 52-13 and drops. Maybe if you’re Paul Bunyan, so you’re powerful enough to spin on a track ratio and bend the drops into risers. Then another guy chewed me down 50 bucks then asked for delivery. I think I’ll throw myself on The Rack when I get home so I can stretch to 6’3″ and be tall enough to keep this bike.
April 22nd, 2010 @3:48 pm
lol @ the kid who asked if it could barspin. that’s all fixed gears really are to the younger community, at least over here. i’m proud to say i got a fixed gear to speed down the streets and make it to my locations in record time.
April 22nd, 2010 @4:14 pm
Put an undersized wheel up front and a freewheel and without the brake he may barspin but the rake of the fork will be exciting when spinning. Give him a broomstick as handlebar or an old crank.
April 22nd, 2010 @4:36 pm
Fads and fashion! Arghhhh! They see a youtube vid and think”WANT”b ut have no comprehension of,,,well any thing really. Age has it’s compensations as well as the many frustrations. Slo and WSB will agree no doubt. Spent the day planting a plum tree and tomatoes and strawberries. Got to play with bikes later. A,B.A.I.L. now has chopped downturned drops. Am I getting “HIP” yet? Ha,ha.MJ has changed the bars and headset on his clunker, and we are in the process of doing bb to allow frame clearance for the steel single 46 chainring we took of the salvaged Raleigh girls bike. Some of the bits are even shiny, gasp! Kind of a busy day. Meeting at work tomorrow to see if I still have a job. Fun,fun, fun. The best to you all, Alan.
April 22nd, 2010 @4:48 pm
Alan, when you go to work leave the car running that will impress them. Did you have tea today like a good Brit ?
April 22nd, 2010 @7:28 pm
Good luck Alan. If you’re as pleasant a worker as you are a bicycle enthusiast you’ll be promoted in no time. Cheers.
April 22nd, 2010 @7:48 pm
I saw those videos too. Mash SF and freestyle vids. Wow!! Wheelies, backward circles, wheel hops, wall rides, messenger mash blah blah blah. Impressive but that was after I bought a fix. And the first thing I said was “yeah like that’ll ever happen.” And honestly, realistic is the best perspective.
April 23rd, 2010 @4:54 am
luft you’re a star, only 4 away from cheap but bling
April 23rd, 2010 @5:16 am
yes and today Luftie can have a cigar and a Whiskey this post will be numero Uno . Controversy pays. I think he should start his own Site and collect Donations and Mellow the Tone and can exclude Whoever. Control is a good Thing. Cheers.
April 23rd, 2010 @5:21 am
Allan Flint and Son can also start a Web Site, he is a very good and entertaining commentor and keeps it polite with humor. Fixed Gear Wasp. Also need import / export business he is in England and Raleigh and Morris and Pashley parts are hard to find in Peoria !
April 23rd, 2010 @6:11 am
I’ll call it Whipster. Whip + Hipster. People say a lot of bad things about me (present
company excluded), and yet here many people congregate, for some
reason or another, for better or worse. Cheers.
April 23rd, 2010 @6:38 am
Congratulation Professor Luflmensh at 121 this is the tie breaker. Sorry Snipertoe. Whip Ster will be fine as the Site name when do you open for Contributions?
April 23rd, 2010 @6:43 am
Sorry, i hit the l instead of the t . my laptop is acting up and the left side capital doesn’t work today. Adios Whipster Professor luftmensh
April 23rd, 2010 @10:08 am
Yeah right WSB. As if there isn’t enough conflict, discussion, controversy, entertainment, and images on this site alone. It’d just be a clone. The “other” forum you’d have to upload pictures to and post comments on. I think myfixedgear has served us so well as innovative web site that combines forum and gallery, a stroke of genius in my opinion, that it can’t really be improved upon or succeeded. Or at least not in a way I can think of. I did fixedgeargallery before this, which was great for my daily fix, but I’d want to comment often on horrible builds and that just wasn’t possible, at least until myfixedgear came around, and it entirely changed the dynamic experience of a “fixed gear gallery,” and I unfortunately stopped visiting the latter web site for this reason. Cheers.
April 23rd, 2010 @12:12 pm
someone put another controversal bike up so we can knock Luft off.See how dangerous being the target is?LOL
April 23rd, 2010 @1:26 pm
Haha. Well now that the Raleigh essentially is out of the picture I’ll have to work on my wife’s single speed. It’s not a bad little cruiser. I’m sure you guys (and haters too) would probably dig it (or dig into it). I’ll start work right away!!
I’m glad my ranting could be of service to you folks. Cheers.
April 23rd, 2010 @2:28 pm
I’m getting warm and fluffy feelings reading the last few comments. There seems to be more word play and fun being had on here than in the past. Can I claim some credit for nudging the F word into the background and encouraging the use of euphemism and humour? Some of the bikes are fantastic too. Cheers guys. I’m still suspended from work. Up against policy over common sense and customer sattisfaction. Business is a nasty world to live in.
April 23rd, 2010 @2:29 pm
I’m currently working on a (probably) rather controversial raleigh. Think 90′s mtb with road wheels and cx tyres, single speed if I can’t do fixed (it has vertical dropouts but it should be fairly easy to do) and quite random bars. All wrapped up in some mad paintjob. Will post it when it’s working ok so everyone can rip the hell out of it.
Very soon it’ll be a case of “there’s too many goddamn bikes in this goddamn garage” (it’s only about 16 including naked frames atm)
April 23rd, 2010 @2:29 pm
p.s. Congrats Luftie in getting to the top of the heap.
April 23rd, 2010 @2:35 pm
Luftie, if you don’t sell this bike raffle it off or list it here as Gabriel does. Whatever don’t spray it white we don’t want another Ghost Buster.
April 23rd, 2010 @2:42 pm
He could write grandiose statements on it. Each one appearing to be blown out of a cloud with a face. Then he could call it Boast Guster.
April 23rd, 2010 @5:33 pm
bring it on MJ!Sounds perfect.
April 23rd, 2010 @7:32 pm
yes, MJ sounds good.
April 24th, 2010 @5:26 am
Where is JT ? Is he jqnyc ?
April 24th, 2010 @7:40 am
Well I was thinking of keeping the Raleigh actually, just having it cut and welded to size. Joking. But that wouldn’t be possible would it? I don’t know. I’m rethinking selling it. I’ve only put $60 into it, and if I kept the wheels, cog, lockring, freewheel, chain, crank, bb, pedals, clips and straps I’d only need a frame, bars and saddle, and I have a spare set of bars and saddle already, and replacing these parts even with more budget ones will most likely cost more than what I hope to get for the Raleigh. So it seems logical to keep these parts. But the proceeds from the sale will go toward my wife’s MacBook, which she needs desperately to replace her crappy HP. Logical situation benefiting me, illogical situation benefiting her, but if it benefits the wife at all then it’s automatically logical, proving illogic logical and justifying illogical actions by their potential logicality, and also voiding logical actions by their potential inverse. It’s way too early for semantics. Thoughts fellas? Cheers.
April 24th, 2010 @4:12 pm
Semantics? I have no problem with people wanting to speak Yiddish. Maybe I misunderstand.
April 24th, 2010 @4:16 pm
Lufty: you had me at Macbook. Are we going to MacDonald’s?
April 24th, 2010 @4:27 pm
Beam me up Luftie. Set phasers to stun and call me Scotty. Luftie the Vulcan for 1st officer. Cloggy for Medic, Wes for the mad Sulu and Slo can be the Russian gunner. Treking here we come!
April 24th, 2010 @4:48 pm
Been working on latest project today. Bought a black Brooks B17N for the Wasp today (it was a real bargain and couldn’t resist), so the passport navigator from it is now on “Project Cudgel” (the latest build). Also got a 46t single crank and 18t freewheel on it by using half links and new chain. Wheels are still mtbs but I found a 700 I’m planning to use, cantilever brakes and cheapo levers. And finally, it’s got inverted district nurse bars with ergo teardrop grips. It still needs a lot of refining but it rides well
April 24th, 2010 @5:03 pm
Sounds cool but the H are district nurse bars? I googled it and all I got were district nurses, so I’m thinking it’s gotta be some of your famous brit slang.
April 24th, 2010 @5:12 pm
Yeah it is. They are also found on old pashleys, but you’d probably call them moustache bars. Very short flat centre bit, bent up & back, then another bend back and down. Been looking for a bike on here with them, but no luck yet. I’ve inverted the bars and it’s really comfortable
April 24th, 2010 @5:13 pm
Similar to those on retro Raleigh pathrace. See the most votes section. Looks a lot like that.
April 24th, 2010 @5:29 pm
I bought some bullhorns when I was told they were moustache bars but yeah that makes a lot more sense. Thanks.
April 24th, 2010 @5:54 pm
Aha! I’ve found out about those bars. WSB mentions them every now & then: North Road Bars.
http://www.theoldbicycleshowroom.co.uk/alloy-north-road-handlebars-422-p.asp
That’s what’s on my bike, same way as in the second pic
May 7th, 2010 @6:19 am
I wonder where North Roads bars came from and where the road is? somewhere near Cambridge ? Pashley on the Gov’nor inverts the North Road Bars or so they say. I like the look and feel more than Bullhorns or P suits.
May 7th, 2010 @9:30 am
It’s just such a different style.
May 7th, 2010 @9:47 am
Yes, invert Noth Roads and point it forward and you have a sick set of bullhorns. Did you sell the Raleigh to a Giant. ? There was a 65 cm. RAl.super grnd. prix sold on ebay recently for only 69 and shipping. Really a big bike in blue also.
May 7th, 2010 @3:19 pm
I think the term North Road may be something to do with the old A1. The road that runs up from London to the north of England. Some1 out there may know for sure.
May 7th, 2010 @3:33 pm
More than likely a Pub .
May 7th, 2010 @5:22 pm
Raleigh is SOLD. Wish I wouldve been taller.
May 7th, 2010 @11:23 pm
Luftie, tall people get more back ache and have trouble finding beds that fit. Be happy as you are. At least you aint a lawn ornament like me. Got a bikey weekend starting. Several “mates” are turning up with bikes to fix. Me and Waspmeister will be busy. Next weekend I’m marshalling a club 10 mile tt on the Saturday afternoon. Been years since I’ve stood on a windy roundabout in the rain for hours waiting for the next minute man to hove into view. I’m really looking forward to it. Glad you finally sold the bike. Seen anything else you want to work on yet?
May 21st, 2010 @9:56 am
Supposedly there’s a barn bike I can have but the old folks giving it to me need to bring it into town and then I have to pick it up in Seattle. That and my budget will be based on selling parts off of it, which will suck.
May 21st, 2010 @10:57 am
this really disappoints me.Paint it purple.cheers
May 21st, 2010 @12:22 pm
Haha. That’s the spirit. You’ll have to send the message via telepathy to the new owner. If it was mine to keep I would have done it a lot differently.
June 16th, 2010 @12:43 pm
Super Record Campagnolo NO Brake HIPSTER ?
June 16th, 2010 @2:46 pm
Lol. I couldn’t afford one dude. It’s called being broke and that’s counter intuitive to the whole trust fund starving artist hipster thing.
June 18th, 2010 @12:50 am
where do u live?
June 18th, 2010 @6:14 am
Portland. Why?
June 19th, 2010 @12:27 am
just wondering cus the whole ratio thing and brakeless isnt a big deal in La. ive sold about 20 different fixies mostly all with no brakes n just seems wierd that alot of ppl find that to be stupid.
July 19th, 2010 @12:20 am
there isn’t a block in this part of the city that’s flat. even the parking lot’s are sloped.
July 24th, 2010 @10:43 pm
Sorry if the answer to this question is above but i cant be bothered to read the whole thread. The question I have is why didn’t you transfer these parts over to your Giant? They are infinitely nicer than what you have on there. And I am sure 52 is big (I like 48 or 49) but if you go 12 or 13 in the back it would be more than doable.
August 3rd, 2010 @4:57 pm
@fab: Dude most of these parts WERE on the giant. the whole wheel setup, that is: rims, tube, tires, lockring, cog, chain, all that came off the giant, as well as the straps. the only stuff i bought for the raleigh was a ten dollar pair of no name drops and a rock hard ten dollar saddle. i did take the stock saddle from the raleigh though, a decent velo gel saddle. i don’t know how flat it is where you live but 52-13 is pretty close to a track ratio (correct me if i’m wrong) and is murderous on the hills, because i rode the raleigh with this ratio and it sucked. i’m at 42-17 right now on the giant and the hills are doable and my top end is pretty decent. so no dude, the raleigh’s parts aren’t an upgrade, and even if i wanted to use the crank, the 52 tooth chainring and crank arm are one piece. i don’t know if you or anyone realizes how much i’ve done to the tank but here’s a list of aftermarket: bb, crank, chainring, chainring bolts, chain, pedals, straps, strap covers, clips, cog, lockring, rims, tires, tubes, rim tape, valve caps, risers, brake lever and caliper, bar tape, saddle (sort of), and the steerer tube cut 1″ and re-threaded. the only original stuff is the frame, fork, stem, and seatpost, so the current setup that so many people bash in no way resembles the original thing, and let me tell you, the stock components were garbage and irksome to use on a daily basis for commuting. like i’ve said before, as cheap and aesthetically lacking as the giant came, i’ve done well with it so far. i’d like to do more but i basically live check to check and rarely scrounge up enough money to buy anything but decent components. does that answer your question?
August 3rd, 2010 @5:19 pm
absolutely. Sorry for asking. I didn’t realize it was such a sensitive subject.
August 3rd, 2010 @5:38 pm
it’s cool i’ve just finally realized there’s a lot of personal history behind all of our bikes, and to say that one bike has infinitely better parts than another just doesn’t seem to translate anymore. each bike is a different experience and represents its rider. and especially in the fixed gear culture the bike is almost never finished because our tastes constantly change. most of the time the end result rarely resembles the journey it’s gone through, and it’s this journey that’s almost more valuable than the end result. so yes it’s a sensitive subject but don’t be sorry for asking, i’m glad you did, more people need to. i didn’t take offense i just wanted to let you know the back story. cheers.
August 3rd, 2010 @6:00 pm
and my finger is tired scrolling to the bottom of this thread. New bike shorter history. I hope the Tank and J.T. appreciate all the loving wrenching you have done. Do you see Raleigh Grand Giant around town?
August 3rd, 2010 @6:04 pm
nope never see it. the tank shows me love.
September 20th, 2010 @6:54 pm
OK Herr Punchblade, did you vote for this fine ride yet ? No skids with this brakeless ratio .
September 27th, 2010 @8:32 pm
I see you still like Raleigh as Punchblade or Luftie. I think the Sugar Rey could be the Marathon model . My 85 has the same Raleigh on the chain stay. Made in Taiwan as the nearly invisible transfer at the very bottom of the seat tube said. I removed the transfer and any other decals/transfers that were removable. The marathon name was sprayed on it seems not peelable. Thanks for the link donovanjdouglas and the profile. I can sleep tonight.
October 5th, 2010 @6:35 pm
Looks like bare bars to me Luftie. Lighten up Punchblade
October 5th, 2010 @7:01 pm
If i kept it they wouldn’t be bare, you know that woody.
October 6th, 2010 @11:42 am
I shoulda asked a long time ago, but how come you have my legs for brakes?
October 6th, 2010 @1:24 pm
don’t bad mouth Bianchis or you find out ’bout break legs.
October 6th, 2010 @9:42 pm
Dave, the “your legs” was more directed at the potential buyer (I used the specs in the craigslist ad).
November 29th, 2010 @6:10 pm
this bike sucks!!
November 30th, 2010 @3:34 am
Luft, I thought you were a “put a brake on it” guy? Nice and simple ride though.. you must be tall as shit!
January 27th, 2011 @10:38 am
So where is Luftmensh/Punchblade ? off making babies ?
April 3rd, 2011 @7:48 pm
looks pretty solid and although massive, real nice frame. not a fan of the bars I’m afaid though
April 28th, 2011 @6:56 pm
Brakeless and Tapeless in Portland. Donde estas Luftmensh ? Wo bist du Liebchen ?
May 8th, 2011 @1:21 am
gotta love the super record parts. nice, clean conversion!
May 23rd, 2011 @7:51 am
Curious how he got a Campy Super Record bottom bracket it that shell.
June 11th, 2011 @11:00 pm
this thread is too long for no reason.
June 22nd, 2011 @5:20 am
Why are my posts not posting. ?
June 22nd, 2011 @5:22 am
I posted : a couple months ago I bought a Raleigh 1978 Super Grand Prix and it had a chainwheel such as this, not Campy. Also it came with Atom 440 pedals and Christophe cages. 100 cm. wheelbase and toe snag is a problem. May sell it off soon.
July 27th, 2011 @2:23 pm
Hey John Thompson, it’s “loser”, unless you were insinuating he is sexually frivolous.
December 4th, 2011 @12:41 am
not bad. if it were mine i’d tape, brake, saddle, wheels, smaller gearing, chrome fork, powder coat.
