This bike is based on an old Hot Wheels toy I had as a kid. I loved the candy apple red, gold and black color scheme, along with some pin striping, so built a bike around them.
That said it may not be to everyone’s taste, it’s definitely a bit flash, but I love it! I now have a Hot Wheels toy I can ride.
I’ve gone to rather extreme lengths to get the look of this bike nailed.
The gold parts are all based on the stem color. They all went into the same anodization bath so that they’d all match (even the spoke nipples). I also found inner tubes with gold stems.
The frame was striped, powder coated with a candy apple clear coat, wet sanded, pin striped, and then a further two layers of clear coat where applied.
I added two coats of clear coat so I don’t have to worry about it getting chipped, this bike is definitely not a “trailer queen”. I put 30 miles on it today and it rides like a dream.
Gearing:
44/18.
Parts:
FBM: Sword Frame and Forks (slightly modified)
White Industries: Crank Set, Chain Wheel, Front Hub, Rear hub is a flip/flop, Pedals, Freewheel
Phil Woods: Titanium Bottom Bracket, Fixed Gear Cog
Nitto: Stem, Bars, Seat Post
Mavic: Open Pro Ceramic Rims
Paul Components: Front Brake Lever
Ciamillo: Negative G Titanium Tuned SL Road Brake
Fizik: Seat
Izumi: Chain
Toshi: Stitch-on Bar Wrap, Pedal Straps
Thompson-Stolen Mashup: Headset
Continental: Grand Prix 4000 Tires
The build took around two weeks to complete, most of that waiting to get all the parts painted and anodized.
Anyway let me know what you think, and in case you’re wondering: Yes I do suffer from OCD.

Totally rad!!

So I’ve been staring at this…absolutely gorgeous!!! What an awesome color combo. That red is amazing. I love the gold too. The spoke nipples are great(i had my rear wheel built with silver nipples) so I love that. It looks like the seat post is split down the center? What kind of post?…didn’t see it listed. Really an amazing build. Respect. 10+
September 3rd, 2010 @2:14 pm
beautiful build. i love this color scheme! cheers.
September 3rd, 2010 @2:17 pm

CLASSSY RED AND GOLD! (:
September 3rd, 2010 @4:22 pm
Hate it….kidding!! I love it. A level of elegance and dedication we all should aspire to. 10/10
September 3rd, 2010 @4:27 pm
Beautiful. Well done.
September 3rd, 2010 @5:10 pm
Thanks for the kind words, I thought that I might have gone a bit over the top with the paint job.
@JaCrazym8: Damn, you know your cars well! You’re really close, but you didn’t notice that it’s a convertible. Care to take another shot? Otherwise it’s a bit of a shame about the car, the owner hasn’t even tried to get the car running since he purchased it years ago.
@ng: The seat post is a standard Nitto, and the saddle is one of the Fizik Versus range. The cool groove down the middle is very comfortable and prostrate friendly, it helps avoid the numb balls syndrome on long rides (sorry, that was perhaps too much information).
Otherwise I had to put up with some scrawny little dick today giving me crap about not unstanding fixie culture. Apparently my bike is too well finished and I shouldn’t be riding with a brake. I was pretty calm, pointed out my Freewheel, and suggested that he fuck off home to put a few more cards in his spokes. We deparded the best of friends.
September 3rd, 2010 @6:03 pm
ar I love a happy departure like that, reminds me of my parting words on several occasions
September 3rd, 2010 @6:10 pm
VERY NICE.hope you ride it alot.enjoy
September 3rd, 2010 @7:02 pm
Hey dude thats a nice bike…
Ride the hell out of it!
September 3rd, 2010 @7:25 pm
@Ryan: This was the first bike snob argument in like 20 years, my last argument revolved around Yellow Skyways and did they make you “a gay” or not!
I was just surprised that anyone as an adult would give a shit about what bike someone else rides.
@sloman: I’m *definitely* enjoying it, I’ve got over a 100 miles on it, and managed to pull around a minute off the timed section on my daily “Tour de Idiot” ride. Red bikes just go faster.
September 3rd, 2010 @11:21 pm
Looks like you need some air in your tire
Nice build.
September 4th, 2010 @4:32 am
Nice – love where the inspiration came from – think I had a similar colour hot wheels car as a kid too. Definitely remember the lush red colour. A couple of things I would change (NOTE: these are only my personal preferences) – Not a fan of the riser stem, I’d flip it, Id also up the gear ratio too – you’re hot wheels need move like hot wheels. The one thing I wouldn’t change is the brake – keep it on stay safe and enjoy you’re hot wheels.
September 4th, 2010 @4:35 am
sedans came w/ two doors in 64′?
September 4th, 2010 @6:06 am
red goes fast,Celeste goes faster!LOL
September 4th, 2010 @9:10 am
@treacle: The gear ratio was changed to a 44/18 after my first long ride, spinning out every couple in minutes is pretty frigging annoying.
A stem flip will have to wait as I’m still recovering from a back injury. However it would be a definitely plus on my regular ride as I seem to be fighting against the wind for at least half the route.
September 4th, 2010 @2:17 pm
I’m going to 44-18 from 48-18 pretty soon. It’s killer on my knees and the hills. Here’s to a quick recovery.
September 5th, 2010 @6:39 pm
The best color combination I’ve ever seen! sick dude!!!.. Somehow it reminded me of ‘Iron Man’ but that a good thing!.. Work hard, ride harder dude!
September 6th, 2010 @4:11 pm
iron man lol
September 8th, 2010 @10:28 am
In my dreams:
Jarvis: Yes. Shall I render using proposed specifications?
Bad Idea: Thrill me.
Jarvis: The render is complete.
Bad Idea: A little ostentatious, don’t you think?
Jarvis: What was I thinking? You’re usually so discreet.
Bad Idea: [gazes at a 1930s hotrod] Tell you what. Throw a little hotrod red in there.
Javis: Yes, that should help you keep a low profile. The render is complete.
Tony Stark: Hey, I like it. Fabricate it. Paint it.
I then hop into my Audi R8 and hookup with Gwyneth Paltrow (this is where I’d change the movie just a tad).
Back In the real world:
I finish the build, then avoid my wife for the next couple of days as she’s pissed off that I spent too much time and money on another bike. Chances of hopping into an R8 and hooking up with Gwyneth Paltrow or my wife: Zero.
September 8th, 2010 @11:03 am
Hahaha! Ah…the life of an addict. Hey it’s a healthy addiction….at least that’s what I keep telling my wife.
September 8th, 2010 @1:41 pm
Very cool bike. Looks fantastic. As far as arguing with the dude about fixie culture: he is the reason I support handing out free rubbers in high school. Perhaps this argument could have been avoided.
September 8th, 2010 @2:09 pm
ever notice the ones that complain of things being too nice or too pretty lack the wherewithall to have/do nice things?as in “I’ll never ride a box bike-new car-ect.”Won’t means can’t all too often. It’s good to see something that reeks class without going to the “grey poupon”place.close to too nice to ride but only close.enjoy
September 8th, 2010 @11:15 pm
Yeah, it’s really easy to be a critic when you haven’t built anything yourself.
I like this site because most of the comments come from folks that have posted bikes themselves and they’re willing to roll with the punches.
That said I’m perennially concerned about building something that falls into the “grey poupon” category, as I fucking hate “trailer queen” vehicles of all kinds.
Cycles are meant to be ridden, sure they’ll get a bit dinged up but generally that adds to their charm, if not you can always get wet sanding/polishing. Also it’s a big plus, as it distracts your wife/girlfriend from the really dumb stuff that you have done outside of the biking world!
September 8th, 2010 @11:57 pm
@bad idea-hit up the studio and see if they want to rent(at exorpitant rate)for their next IM movie, stark would roll around his car collection on it
September 9th, 2010 @5:31 am
Awesome build… I really hope you ride this though.. hot wheels were meant to go fast!
September 9th, 2010 @10:58 am
The bike looks like more fun than the non running car. I will venture a guess it is a 67 280 SL . Nice bike and attractive color combos. ( my wife spends 115 on a pair of Dansko shoes she already has in yellow and gives me heat for a 125 dollar bike shipping included which I may clean up and use or sell for more. Some spend $125 for golf and the 19th hole whereas I cut the grass for exercise.) Ride on and be happy.
September 9th, 2010 @11:18 am
@Bubba: It’s being ridden everyday, and I’m slowly getting back into form. I managed to reel in a rider on a ten speed up a hill the other day which was a great pleasure. Of course he passed me on the flat as I just spin out at much above 20 MPH.
Hills are now becoming easy pickings for me as most 10 speeders just shift into granny gears, and I go Tour De France final sprint mode, or at least I’d like to think that so, “Bad Idea pulls up alongside Lance Armstrong and passes! Another Stage Win for Team Dumbass”.
September 9th, 2010 @1:06 pm
HA AHA HAHA HA HA…….team dumbass has taken the lead on the final stage,it was a bad idea for bad idea to go for the early sprint on the final hill but he has proven less is more for conquering the hill, he will be kickin ass and takin names, and that wraps it up for another day of emense fun on the hill,so from me,akubar c mantesy, keep rollin, roll hard roll long
……always wanted to commentate…maybe not
September 9th, 2010 @1:10 pm
But maybe the guy on the ten speed was on mile number 99 of his century . Sounds like fun either way.
September 9th, 2010 @10:37 pm
@Wooden Shoe: Come on, please don’t ruin my fantasy. Team Dumbass has to win sometimes!
September 10th, 2010 @3:30 am
#1 spot??? It’s overrated …
September 10th, 2010 @6:20 am
I don’t know, BA. It’s pretty nice. I was excited to not see a pair of gold deep v’s too.
September 10th, 2010 @9:40 am
@BA: Oh come on, my bike is a wotk of unsurpassed genius…
Otherwise I’m surprised at the ratings so far. I like my build, but i certainly don’t think it’s the best bike on the site. I guess you can never underestimate the power of Hot Wheels.
September 10th, 2010 @11:12 am
If I might ask, what sort of toy vehicle was this based on? Muscle car, super car? I’m just curious. I think this is very well done and the finished product, particularly the paint and color matching, shows the extreme lengths you went to. If I liked red or gold, both of which are probably my least favorite colors, this would make my top ten. Having said that, I think this deserves the rating it has.
September 10th, 2010 @11:50 am
Yeah it is really nice. Arguing “best” or “overrated” would be like arguing over art. BA, which one’s yours?
September 10th, 2010 @1:07 pm
Bad Idea, just checked with headquarters, yes that was The Marlboro Man you passed and he was on oxygen in the 3rd mile of his Century ride. You are the Winner !
September 10th, 2010 @1:24 pm
Word, ng. It’s easy to criticize when you aren’t willing to bear some criticism yourself. Speaking of which, I should post soon but I’d like to chop my bars first.
September 10th, 2010 @1:42 pm
I tried to post yesterday but it said NO action after digesting the pictures. ? puzzle to me.
September 10th, 2010 @1:53 pm
Wooden, did you crop your photos to as small as possible? If so and you still got an error msg, maybe email admin. I know Fab has been trying for over a week to post so maybe we broke MFG.
Word, Punch.
September 10th, 2010 @2:16 pm
Punchblade: It was a Funny Car Hot Rod from the 1970′s, my uncle used to bring HotWheels back from the US for me and my brother when I was a kid living in the UK.
In terms of arguing about best and better on this site, I agree with ng, it’s basically pointless. I’m still pleasantly surprised with the reception my latest build has received, but is it the best overall bike on this site, probably not!
That said if I ever get to a stage when I can scratch build something like this:
http://www.nostalgic.net/bicycle649.htm
Then I would be tempted to claim it’s the best bike on the site, based on workmanship alone.
September 10th, 2010 @2:50 pm
Bad,if you ever get that good, you have at least one customer(if you’ll take a check).
September 10th, 2010 @5:36 pm
@NG have not figured how to crop a picture and ebay takes the pictures, maybe J.T. runs the show. What name is Luftie using ? I have a hunch but not yet 100 % sure, he can
not just drop out after his action on a constant basis. @ bad idea , cool old bike the 1910 Pierce. What about the car 280 SL from the 60′s
September 10th, 2010 @11:03 pm
Guys, I’m more of vintage looks, classic frames and naked drop bars kind of guy … That has been dominating top ten list for quite sometime …
September 10th, 2010 @11:49 pm
@wooden: Unfortunately not my car, rich owner storing it at I friends shop, hoping that they’ll get around to getting it on the road pretty soon.
@BA: If you like vintage looks, I can understand why this build wouldn’t be your cup of tee. It’s a fun build based on a hot wheels toy, it’s not meant to be a deisgn classic or anything!
Otherwise it seems the easiest way to get this build out of the top ten would be to post a build of your own. A good vintage build with a classic frame would get a ten vote from me, and yes this is a friendly challenge.
September 11th, 2010 @1:44 am
oh shit this is like biker buildoff
September 11th, 2010 @9:53 am
Yeah, Biker Build Off!!!
I’m going with bright orange, chrome, naked chicks, boobs and dragons as my theme. Oh! Also I’m going to get some major ink done also with loads of naked chicks boobs and dragons. I’m going to be soooo badass….
While back in the real world BA is going to roll out an incredible build with an Italian hand built frame from the 60′s, and I’m going to look like a douche.
September 12th, 2010 @1:03 am
@Bad Idea-crack up bro,I tend to style myself after jesse James with the atitude, nobody tells me how to build a bike,Im just missing the full workshop, tons of tubeing and and racks full of parts
September 12th, 2010 @5:47 am
@ bad idea, boobs are interesting but Brains are more important. With out a brain and the ability to use it a Boob is just a Boob. Unfortunately there are more boobs than brains in my part of the World. ( of course the Boobs ride Brakeless and Braless )
September 13th, 2010 @7:46 am
i see a brakeless comment again wsb…
stop it you fucking orange bastard!
(just kidding)
September 13th, 2010 @9:14 am
Thanks Daniel, but I’m not officially a bastard since my parents were married unlike 40 % of the births in the USA currently. I act like one at times , but its better than acting like a pussy. Speaking of which, I took the brake of a fixed gear but am too chicken shit to ride it down the hills here for pictures near the river and statues in Elgin Illinois. Has a big wide Schwinn longhorn bars but can’t load the pictures into MFG last time I tried two times.
September 13th, 2010 @4:02 pm
your from the states wsb? i thought you where Oranje!!! im kind of dissapointed now..
September 13th, 2010 @5:36 pm
No choice, my parents emigrated to US when I was five years old, what could I say. Five years of Adolph was a bit much 1940 to May 5 1945 My parents had twins 9 months after Liberation . Nice way to celebrate I suppose.
September 14th, 2010 @2:58 am
but your parents came from holland? or where they from g-many?
they did he right thing! but i think i would have emigrated earlyer..
this off topic haha
September 14th, 2010 @5:27 am
May 1951 by Veendam a large ship. Yes we should have followed Einstein’s example and left earlier . My sister was born the day the Nazi’s invaded. Could be worst ask Anna .
September 22nd, 2010 @12:04 am
The score on this bike with the number of votes that it has gotten is off the charts. It’s nice, don’t get me wrong. But is it 20% nicer than the top of the pack?
–
I was convinced you were oranje as well which you basically are blood wise. It’s nice to hear the backgrounds of people.
–
It is a very nice, creative, original build and that makes me happy to have it on top. It’s also nice to see people unified. Dominance can be frankly attractive.
September 22nd, 2010 @12:46 am
@WSB-Anne Frank?
September 22nd, 2010 @8:31 am
certainly makes it a target, don’t it?Time will send it down if other bikes show up.Tuff act to follow though.By all our arbitrary parameters,it scores.Track ends, good parts, artful color matching, details galore,brake,ridden,ect.ect.The only off putting element for me was “posing ” it with the Benz,a bit elitist, this is a bike site not cars.but it is a pretty bit of kit that hits all the boxs so top of the list for what it’s worth.
September 22nd, 2010 @9:41 am
I photographed the bike next to a Benz not to be elitist, but because I liked the contrast between the dilapidated dusty old Benz and my stupidly over polished bike.
Otherwise the HotWheels bike doesn’t look quite so pristine at the moment. I was hit by a car on my ride to work yesterday. Luckily I got away with some road rash and a tweaked wrist, and the bike got a little scraped up. I was pretty pissed off with my colleagues when I got into work as their first question was “Is the bike okay?”. I guess that’s what happens when you work at a company in the bike industry.
September 22nd, 2010 @10:29 am
I just realized I sounded super defensive in my last post.
I should have just gone with the truth: I had to photograph my bike against my vintage Benz, as I lent my Ferrari too one of my many supermodel girlfriends.
September 22nd, 2010 @11:11 am
kick ass
September 22nd, 2010 @11:56 am
wasn’t meant as critical, just obversational.as any adman will tell you, this was textbook “halo or rub off”effect.totally not needed considerimg the quality of the ride.bummer about the bike, time to build anew eh?anyway, even parked next to one of my old Mustangs that would be a classy ride.cheers
September 22nd, 2010 @2:18 pm
Luckily I won’t need to build anew, I just need to replace the bars, wrapping, and pedals.
Of course, this’ll be handled by one of my supermodel girlfriends when they get back from running chores for me.
September 22nd, 2010 @4:09 pm
glad to hear that.oh,can I borrow the Ferrari if she’s done with it?cheers.
September 22nd, 2010 @5:51 pm
Sorry to hear about the wreck. Driver’s fault I’m assuming? Be thankful it wasn’t the frame, or your head.
September 22nd, 2010 @6:28 pm
Better to post next to an interesting car or bridge or building than a purple couch or cluttered kitchen. I wanted to post my single speed 50 year old tandem next to a M.B. Smart car for comparison. The tandem is 8 feet long and I think the so called smart car is less. The guy in the car does not stay in one place long enough to pose with the bike. Bad Idea glad you are not hurt too bad. You never said which model the car is. SL from the mid sixties ?
September 23rd, 2010 @7:25 am
@punch: Yeah definitely drivers fault, I was slowing down for a red light like a good little cyclist, and a carshot past me to make a right and just clipped my front wheel sending me down.
But as you mentioned nothing serious so I’m grateful, my leg can grow more skin and the bike stuff is a easy fix.
@wooden: It’s mid-1960′s 220 SE Convertable
October 2nd, 2010 @8:43 pm
hoping for update pics soon
October 6th, 2010 @8:37 am
Love the color and Horn Bar.
October 9th, 2010 @1:45 am
why this bike is still #1? it’s a good bike for sure. but barely always in #1? come on dude
October 9th, 2010 @3:02 am
gotta top it,build, vote or both-lets have at it.tough one to follow.
October 12th, 2010 @12:42 pm
@iwe: You have your wish, my bike is off the number #1 spot. Just in time for me to enter my next build
October 14th, 2010 @9:02 pm
wow bro nice ride i love every part of this one!!!
October 15th, 2010 @8:03 am
i really like those fmb frames. how do they handle?
October 15th, 2010 @8:03 am
lol…i meant fbm
October 15th, 2010 @1:00 pm
Handling is somewhere between a 24″ BMX and a traditional road bike. It’s very responsive, and the steel frame has just enough flex to take the edge off riding on crappy roads.
So far I’ve run my bike up to ~40MPH running freewheel and it feels pretty stable to me, but one of my roadie buddies said that it felt twitchy at speed.
I hope this helps.
October 17th, 2010 @7:36 pm
Judging by the height of your saddle/position of your bars, I’d say you should have put more thought into the size of your frame than your color scheme.
October 18th, 2010 @7:06 am
looks borderline but OK.Compact geometry?I use to be comfortable on a 57 but prefer a 53 or 54 fixie for the “tossableity”and easy lift front wheel and lighter feel.Comfort on long rides doesn’t matter as 10 miles on the fixed is max.
October 18th, 2010 @12:12 pm
@scrodzilla: “I’d say” given that you have no idea of my height or relative body dimensions, that your not in a position to make a call with regards to bike sizing. I’ve ridden several hundred miles on this bike, find it to be comfortable and easy to ride. This is I believe is a pretty good indication that my bike fits me just fine.
Otherwise I like your web shop, the Leader T-Shirts and “One Less Roadie” stickers are totally hardcore.
October 18th, 2010 @2:40 pm
I wasn’t trying to get you riled up. Just making an observation based on what I know about proper bike fit/setup. Usually a seat that low = frame too big. It’s your bike and if you’re comfortable on it, so be it.
I do dig the color scheme and the overall build though, so please don’t think I was hating!
October 18th, 2010 @3:11 pm
Sorry if I was hostile in my response, just gave up smoking, and I’m not in the best of moods.
October 18th, 2010 @3:24 pm
Kudos for quitting. More power to ya!
December 6th, 2010 @5:34 pm
TRUST FUND, CHACH!
January 7th, 2011 @9:04 am
read the back story,I get the feeling BA might know how to build, the car pose just distracts and does lend a Grey Poupon vibe to a good owner build.
May 6th, 2011 @8:43 am
How is this not number one, seriously?
May 15th, 2011 @12:11 pm
I had that car as a Matchbox. For you youngsters, Matchbox cars were the precursor toy car before Hot Wheels. Same scale as the Matchbox but were miniature recreations of stock vehicles not dream cars. They were usually classic cars of some sort. contemporary classics too. Now for the bike. I DO remember that Hot Wheels color scheme and I always liked it. The bike (itself) would still be a winner in battleship gray.
July 22nd, 2011 @11:17 am
I needed to put you one bit of remark in order to say thanks a lot again for the stunning tips you have documented above. It’s wonderfully open-handed with people like you to make easily all that a lot of folks might have marketed for an electronic book to end up making some dough for themselves, primarily seeing that you could have tried it in case you decided. Those basics as well served to become good way to realize that other individuals have similar desire really like mine to see significantly more around this condition. I think there are many more pleasurable times in the future for many who look over your blog.
July 31st, 2011 @9:02 am
Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years coach leather backpacks than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.
October 12th, 2011 @9:26 pm
unusually classy for a bike with shiny gold parts…but you might as well put a sign on it saying: “Steal me.”
November 7th, 2011 @12:47 pm
I’d probably love this if I liked red or gold.
November 20th, 2011 @3:42 pm
I guess it’s a little late to comment. Love the bike! I couldn’t ride it though. I’d be too afraid of scratching it. I got my bike pro painted, scratched before I even got to ride it. It was the worst feeling in the world!
