I got this 1980 Schwinn Varsity as a pile of junk from a local bike shop and started shedding weight as soon as I got it home. Tore it all the way down to the frame. Put in a Truvativ BB converter, Lugged CR-Mo fork from 80′s roadie, Rebuilt original headset with normal top nut so I could use a normal 1″ stem. 27″ Wheels from a 1985 Schwinn Super le Tour. Forte 27 x 1″ Tires. BMX Freewheel. Forte Pro saddle.
Overall, weight is down to just over 25 lbs.

Good weight loss. It looks a lot sleeker than my ole Varsity 10 speed which was around 38 pounds and stolen before I got into fixed gear riding. Nice job but now buy a 15 tooth cog and try it fixed it is more fun than freewheeling in my opinion. Thanks

Yup. Riding fixed is WAY more fun. I took my road bike out the other day just to keep the spider webs off it and I wanted to stop riding after 10 minutes due to lack of inspiration. Coasting made me feel like there was something wrong with my legs…it was weird.

The project isn’t quite finished. I’m using some common freewheel wheels and didn’t wanna do the ghetto fixxed setup. I have a fixie and love it, but wanted to try something different with just a single free. Bike is currently at 24 lbs. 11 oz.

if you are gonna keep the freewheel you should probably put a back brake.

I hope you have some grand plans because this looks gangly and stuck in 1980. And please rip off that fender and kickstand.

Kickstand is gone now, that was another 1.1 lbs. Finally got a BB with correct spindle length so the chainline isn’t way off. I will be repainting it within the year hopefully with custom decals. Oh, and picked up a New Departure track hub so it will become a fixie as well.

oh yeah and 1980 was the shite! iron maiden debut album dropped, the empire strikes back was released,… wait john lennon, john bohnam, and bon scott died plus richard pryor got burned up ok maybe it did suck.

Making progress. Why Decals? I like the 80′s skiny steel steeds. Good work and I am sure that kickstand removal was a bear. Thanks

Seat post that high and with that angle screams danger. But maybe that’s just me.

I must be missing something here. I’m not tryin to be a dick…but seriously…WHY is this rated so high?
February 16th, 2010 @12:41 pm
It must be the stem that’s as tall as the head tube, the spoke reflectors and the seat post that’s half the length of the seat tube. This actually looks dangerous.

the overall look of te bike is shit! sorry.

This bike was rebuilt , not just purchased and is a vast improvement over the original ten speed heavy weight it once was. Retro is in for this old bird. Thanks

How do we see the top 100 ? Blue Steal is no. 3 Lots of diversity out there in the voting. Hard to figure.
