I was just in Mission workshop in SF the other day….
very small shop, but they make very good builds for sure.
nice of you to choose the upgrade to the thompson parts ;p
very classy. just make sure you lock your bike up especially in SF!!! get two locks! seriously, one u lock, one cable.

Nice one. Very clean.

Enjoyed looking at everything until I noticed the pake crankset, which is probably the cheapest thing on here. Nice build but crank priority seems disproportionate to your budget.

slo – my guess with the spacers would be that he has a threaded fork and he is afraid to cut it to size because he’ll have to rethread it. Luft did this without issue. When I finally did it on the Brera (which I guess is lost in deep cyberspace), it wasn’t that bad, but it did me really nervous.

Punch – didn’t one of your bikes (the tank) have a Pake crank? And at least this one is silver
September 24th, 2010 @1:50 pm
wow this is nice. and boring!
September 24th, 2010 @1:54 pm
@daniel-boring? really-how so,maybe ‘plain if your not into this style but don’t thing ‘boring would be the right word
September 24th, 2010 @2:06 pm
If I were to buy a crank for this it wouldn’t have been a pake.
It’s not boring it’s understated.

oh – and I really dig the bike. It’s the first time I have seen this Thomson stem used on a classic build and I think it looks great and matches nicely with the seat post. I also must admit that while I would think that box rims might go better on a classic build you are doing fine with the Velocity rims- your choice of color is perfect
September 25th, 2010 @9:12 am
Good call about the box rims fab. It seems like no one does them anymore, especially on vintage frames. It’s Velocity or something similar again and again. I do agree that the V’s look good on this, but if they weren’t silver I don’t think they would.

I wasn’t aware that Mission’s site was ala Republick or other we’ll-build-it-all-for-you sites. I went through their steps and was amazed how quickly their tally went up when you wanted anything past stock parts. I basically entered the bike we are looking at and it totaled circa $1500 (plus shipping i think). Hmmmmmm less impressed. Especially with only $250-325 (based on color) in the frame & fork.

Priceless.
March 3rd, 2011 @12:09 pm
Yeah, Mission Bikes may be better than Republic but still isn’t really the way to go. Neither is that Pake crankset. Looks nice…nice and overpriced.
BTW – your straps are installed upside down.
March 3rd, 2011 @1:18 pm
Woops! upside down straps. I like to put my wheels on upside down.
March 3rd, 2011 @7:07 pm
Love the PlemonsCo straps, expensive as shit but the best i’ve ever seen. I have mine in white. Yours are totally upside down broseph.
April 21st, 2011 @8:12 am
Awesome! I have a Brooks Team Pro in honey and am waiting for the matching bar tape. Hopefully the combo will look as good on my bike as it does on this one. What kind of straps are those?
April 27th, 2011 @12:21 pm
Thanks for all your comments! And yes you are right, the straps are upside down in these pictures. I changed them basically right after the pictures.
And @Mark: The straps are form Plemons (http://plemonsco.com/) they are pretty good, but also a bit pricy (around 60 dollar)
February 13th, 2012 @11:33 am
agreed. boring. I’d have liked to see the whole bike in one of your photos. Someone had a brainfart when they were picking out their cranks.
February 13th, 2012 @12:34 pm
aesthetically this is beautiful. however, i believe the crankset, which is an essential component along with the wheels in their effect upon ride quality, should exceed the value of the seat post and stem. your saddle is also worth twice that of your crankset. it seems like you were going for a bank-breaking build but stopped short with your crankset, which should probably be a sugino 75 or comparable. just my thought.
February 22nd, 2012 @7:22 pm
Is there a reason for the Pake hate or just that they are inexpensive. I’ve never heard they worked poorly or broke. Just curious.
February 22nd, 2012 @10:28 pm
because it’s inexpensive. extremely out of place on this, and a on a lot of big budget builds.
February 23rd, 2012 @8:38 am
Expensive isn’t always better and vis-versa. They do look rather plain and stand out now that you all mention them. But if it gets a project up and running and functional, don’t see the harm. They are easily replacable when funds allow.
February 23rd, 2012 @10:27 am
I dont place a lot of stock in cranksets. Yeah, your transmission gets you around (as long as its sturdy you’re fine). Wheels are where you should invest money. I dont think there is a thing wrong with Pake for a lesser build. However, as Bob pointed out, the stem or seatpost cost more alone – Both are components that aren’t as integral in a good ride.
February 23rd, 2012 @3:41 pm
Totally agree. A solid crankset works. Sugino 75, Campy, etc. are pretty but excessive IMO.

CUTE! I stole it to you, is so sweet!
