i think it ruins the look without tape, like its unfinished.
but i guess looks are subjective.
what isn’t subjective is the fact handlebars are designed to have some sort of grippy substance attached to them so you can hold onto them, like tape or grips. its like as if removing the leather coverings on steering wheels of hot rods become “a look” or not putting grip tape on a skateboard. some people might think it looks cool, but it decreases the functionality of the component severely. sure you can use gloves, but gloves were meant to add extra padding and grip to already taped/gripped bars.
i think some black leather tape would really complete this very nice build…
Wow, very nice. I like the clean look. I would agree with most about the tape. Pick the correct kind; material, color, etc…. and taped bars can make the bike. Leather tape but with lots of chrome showing at the stem.
Hey guys, bars are now wrapped with black leather tape. They were always going to be, just got a bit excited with the build and posted it prematurely. Still waiting on Keirin brake. Will post new pictures soon.
bike now has black leather wraps, it was always going to. i just got too excited and uploaded it prematurely. Also just waiting on keirin brake from track supermarket. thanks for all the positive feedback though guys !
Lovely. The allcaps title immediately put me in a bad mood. The idea of this being a track bike with no tape is a joke. As others have said before, I can’t wait until this fad is done. Well done otherwise. The gear ratio doesn’t seem that off. I like a big (2.5-3) gear ratio as well. Couldn’t skid it without ripping out a knee and track stands are more complicated, but I love the higher speeds.
Hey guys, black leather bar tape is now on and the brake is on it’s way from japan. These were things that were always going to be done, I just got so excited on the build that I posted prematurely. Thanks for all the great comments otherwise. P.S. does anyone know how to edit your pictures so I can upload the new ones ? Thanks.
Those who want to add a brake to this are barbarians, good thing they don’t own such a frame.
I’m cool with those that ride brakes, but you don’t drill an NJS frame to fit them. It’s just sacrilege. Buy a track frame with drilled holes and a fork that was made for a brake if you want to use a brake.
Newsflash: Not all brakeless bikes are for posers. Some guys actually have control over these through practice. Match the ratio to your strength.
Dear lord I didn’t read all the comments. Brake is on its way? Poor, poor frame.
I understand it’s one of those clamp-on “Keirin” brakes, which is good for the frame but still. Not my cup of tea to ruin such a frame with that. Agreeing with the bartape though, although I’d prefer those rubber keirin grips on a bike like this just like on the Keirin tracks to stay in theme.

Very nice. Hope it sees the track.

Prob no track with that gear ratio at least, but I agree its a nice bike for sure. I like the look but would prefer bar tap or grips.

tape and brake though the chrome blinds me to practicality.nice

needs tape and a brake.
naked bars = high “aesthetics/non-functionality” ratio.
no brake = makes sense on velodrome, none on the street.

oh but with tape and brakes i would say this is an excellent build.

Like the chome! Don’t use tape, ruins the look.
Use gloves instead, great substitute….

Agree with above said. This would look perfect with grip and stopping power.
