I’m just trying to be more positive, constructive, open minded and forgiving. It was wrong for me to have judged so severely when I ride a cheap commuter frame dressed up in trendy parts. Know what I mean jelly bean?
I agree reflectors are safety smart….and I’m all for riding safely. But these kind of spoke reflectors always give bikes that “department store” look. I’m just saying….there are ways to stay visible and still keep your good looks. I’d check out those tires that have a reflective band that runs around the sidewall.
I have used some reflective tape on seat posts and chain stays which are available in colors and show up quite well. Schwalbe Marathon and others have the reflective strip in the sidewall I bouught one but too cheap to spend another 25 bucks for the 2nd one. I have one 80′s wheel reflector in a teardrop shape sort of retro but still nerdy but I wear socks with sandals sometimes also so it completes the nerd look. No not black socks ! purple of course.
I agree with Luft – a reflector is not going to save your life if you don’t have LED lights. I like beater conversions and I think you have done great Amber. The colored chain is one of my pet peeves but your choice. I love the fork.
Guys, those are not reflectors. They’re led spoke lights called Spokelit. They are battery operated lights, when I squeeze them I can either make them quickly blink or stay lit. I definitely need them because i ride in Manhattan traffic, and borough to borough. And yes to bike polo!
HAHA. I read the first part and the the first thing I thought was blackstar. I forgot where mos got those lines.

i love that song “redefinition” favorite line “standin’ on a rooftop with the zulu gestapo” mos & talib solo or as blackstarr love those dudes. no homo.
Hahahaha – i was just listening to my favorite rawkus issue from that period and with those guys – Mos, Talib, the Beat Junkies, etc – Soundbombing II – unreal. It made cleaning a 25 year old road bike a pleasure – “so throw your hands in the air everybody get with it, the Universal, Magnetically, BBoy scientific you don’t stop, It go on to the rhythm you don’t, BUST it”.
—
Seriously if you like that period (blackstar, hi-tek, mos, talib, beat junkies) i think that Soundbombing II is the Desert Island record. I can not recommend enough..

Once again Amber puts us all in our place. I have seen those spoke LEDs before and find them oddly mesmerizing when they roll by. And yes those would be super safe. Big up again on the ride Amber. Be safe in Gotham

That’s awesome sup/fab. I’ve been listening to blackstar, mos def’s black on both sides, nas’ illmatic, atcq’s the low end theory, the fugees’ the score, and of course odb’s return to the 36 chambers for comic relief. I’m stuck in 90′s hip hop because it’s so pure and well crafted, especially mos def. Also been listening to company flow and el-p for something dirtier. Alan, you’re missing out buddy. Good stuff. Cheers.
Man I forgot about digable planets. Back before I moved all of my music to my computers I had a cd case with all of this good hiphop (and other stuff) that I lost. I’ve gone back and downloaded a lot of what was in it but I forgot about some of the cds i had, like digable planets.

Side note, is anyone else psycho pissed that the roots is now a late night show band?? When I first heard they were on with jimmy fallon i was like ‘man I hate jimmy fallon but at least the roots playing on his show will make it bearable’. I didn’t really think about the fact that they’d just be playing whatever generic songs late night shows play. Also it sucks that black thought is now just a background singer when guest artists play or just stands around making various noises while the rest of the band plays. I hate when good bands/groups go corporate and loose what made them awesome.
AF,not uncool, just a different set of reference-time knowledge. Some day their kids will have their own set of references that they won’t follow.Just try to follow and enjoy .It’s all good and as it should be,respect the old and the new.

@ cs i know through mutual friends members of the roots (disclaimer i am not friends w/them)and the jimmy fallon thing was good for the band the bulk of the money as agroup came from touring (like most musicians)but because of the size of their stageshow the profit margin for them was smaller. doing jimmy fallon gives them a steady paycheck close to home (philly) and time to record (new album is sick) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n94URvpQOAc)

luft you have to check out this stuff as the other you mentioned are all top 10 for me. Pointing out Return from the 36 Chambers gives you Infinite points in my book.

Other than those some desert island records (or better some Dessert Island records) are:
- Talib kweli and Hi Tek – Reflection Eternal
- Hi-Tek – Hi-Teknology
- Biggie – Ready to Die
- Common – Like Water for Chocolate, Ressurection
- the early Wu RZA produced records – 36 Chambers, Method Man’s Tical, the Ghost Dog score (the white covered Japanese issue NOT the Blue US versions that doesn’t have the score)

Downloading it as I write. As a suggestion back – are you familiar with DJ Quik’s Under Tha Influence? Best one of his by far. The beats are unbelievable. He’s got a filthy mouth but… A ****KILLER*** recommendation that I can give you is DJ Rhettmatic – The Exclusive Collection. Just about everyone from Mos to Talib to Common is on it – 2 discs as well. One last one would be Slum Village – Fantastic Vol 2.

i know dj quick was “just like compton” on that album? i’ll check it out i’ve been getting into some more LA stuff from the that era, was more of a bay area fan (hieroglyphics, rass kass, pharcyde) i’ll def check it out rhettmatic i’m looking for now and slum village love them.
Soundbombing sounds great, I’ll check it out. Rawkus is RZA’s label isn’t it? MF Doom is awesome. Amy, I think MF Doom would like your fixie. He’s into comics, action figures and bright colors and yours almost reminds me of cartoons, especially the tube pad.
No – Rawkus was not the Wu. Rawkus was Mosdef, Lyricist Lounge, Soundbombing, Talib, Blackstar, etc… And I think the owner of the bike is Amber, not Amy… Incidentally there are 3 Soundbombings – I like II the best and then III and I equally.
Talib – Rush. Quality was one of my favorite albums back in college. It also makes me sad to say that b/c it makes me realize how old I am. I like dead prez but I can’t get past the irony of them talking about getting it over on the system all of the time but at the same time collecting money from the record industry.
Dude you are a whipper-snapper. I was a junior in college when Doggystyle came out. Although, I’ve got one better – when I was 13, and here for a semester to see if we liked it over Italy, I went to go see Madonna (Like a Virgin tour) at Radio City and the Beastie Boys opened up for her. 2 years before License to Ill. I had no idea what they were screaming for. Didn’t get it, AT ALL, but loved it and was wicked disappointed afterward when I couldn’t find anything like it.
–
As regards Talib, I think Reflection Eternal with Hi-Tek is as good as it gets. Although his work on Hi-Tek’s first record, Hi-Teknology, together with Mos is right up there.
–
Was listening to Method Man’s first record Tical in the car today. Produced by the RZA in that first burst of Wu together with Enter the 36 Chambers, ODB’s Return, Ghostface and Raekwon – Only Built 4 Cuban Links, and Ghost Dog’s score and soundtrack all within 18 months of each other. In the Wu-Tang Manual book by the RZA he describes the period as basically a never ending session that chopped up into records only for necessity but that the same methodology ruled the roost. Freaking killer…
DUDE! The Ghost Dog soundtrack was fucking amaaazing!!! Not to mention the movie was totally bad ass. I haven’t watched that in years, I need to put it in my netflix list. I miss those days with the Wu-Tang clan. I wasn’t super super into it at the time, but I liked a lot of the music and now going back through old cds I love it. Daytona 500 on Ghost Face’s Ironman record – best song ever. One of the other things I liked about some of the guys from wu-tang is that they went on to do bigger and better things. I mean you look at the list of stuff that the rza has done during that time and since then and its amazing. So many music artists hit their moment of fame and then don’t really go anywhere with it and fade away, it’s cool that some of the clan has done something with the fame.
-
Man that would have been cool to see the beastie boys that early in their career. I’m always on and off with them because they can get a bit repetitive, but they have sooo much solid work. Mix Master Mike actually came through STL years back and did a solo show which was awesome. I’ve always been into rap and hip hop that has more of a diverse melodic landscape so hearing what he did when he was the only focus was really cool.
-
Speaking of beats, have you guys ever heard any of blockhead’s solo stuff? He did a lot of beats for Aesop Rock’s early albums. Downtown Science, good album.
-
I actually haven’t heard Hi-Tecknology. I do like Hi-Teck’s work so I’m going to look it up. I think out of that whole Blackstar’s Mos Def, Talib, Hi-Teck I’ve always been into Mos Def’s stuff the most. He has the most diversity and its always interesting to see how his music evolves. Like you listen to the jump between Black on Both Sides and The New Danger and it’s vastly different but both (in my opinion) equally good. Man, I’m going to be going through all of my old music tonight!
Hi-Tek produced Black on Both Sides, Reflection Eternal, Blackstar, Pharoah Monche’s first record, Hi-Teknology 1 and 2. He’s the beats behind all that early Rawkus stuff. I love his stuff. His first solo record was Teknology Vol 1 and its awesome.
–
Ghost Dog – mate there are two versions. 1 is a blue cover and was released here. It’s lots of hip hop Wu style that wasn’t really in the movie but is killer. The other is white and is the score. Which is all that AMAZING music from the movie with 2 songs with lyrics. You can find the white one, but you need to look for it. If you give me an address I will burn one for you. And yeah – I love the movie.

just saw most wu @ the roots picnic, saw ghost last year @ cs daytona 500 is my shit! ghost dog awesome! mix master mike sick! @ fab i know how you feel grew up going to shows @ clubs in the old (pre-giuliani) nyc so since i was 13. i first heard mos w/ a tribe called quest. i grew up on native tounges saw busta rhymes live when he was in “leaders of the new school” so i know about feeling old.
Listen to us! I feel like an old man on the porch of a southern retirement home with a glass of lemonade. Ya remember when… Ha ha ha. @CS- Big up for the mention of the New Danger. In my opinion, even with how totally killer and defining of this East Coast, NYC Brooklyn style Black on Both Sides and Blackstar were, the New Danger is his best record because he risks so much and breaks so much ground, than you can’t be amazed enough by the product. I was lucky enough to meet Mos when he came to London in 2004 for an acting thing and got to know him a bit on 4 other visits (the wonder of being a recording engineer and puffing in a foreign land. People find you. Quick…..). According to him he got nothing but crap for the record. I can believe that, but it’s such a pity.
–
Something you should try to find and if not maybe we I can burn a copy and pass it around, is a 4 disc compilation of Mos called “We are Hip Hop, You, Me, Everybody” – it Is in essence all of Mos’s songs on other people’s records – some that you’ve heard like Macy Gray’s I’ve Committed Murder, and TONS that I had never heard anywhere. B-sides of Blackstar stuff – probably through 1999-2000. Hard to find but worth the look. Don’t be afraid to ask if you are interested.

new danger is awsome but true magic(’06) and his latest the estatic are dope too. if you have to choose the estatic’s the way to go. @fab you’re a rec. eng. all makes sense now. my dad’s best friend was an eng. @ columbia/sony in nyc.
@Fab – DUDE! SHOOT ME AN EMAIL: chris@willcycleforcharity.com
I’d LOVE a copy of that! I fear not of man!
@Sup – I’m downloading ecstatic as I type. I’ve been out of the hiphop world for a bit lately so I didn’t know he came out with an album last year. I’m most definitely looking forward to it.

PWNED. Sorry Amber, I’m horrible with names.

@ cs talib w/ dead prez?, dp those two are like the nwa of the naughts
August 4th, 2010 @12:02 pm

As regards Talib, I think Reflection Eternal with Hi-Tek is as good as it gets. Although his work on Hi-Tek’s first record, Hi-Teknology, together with Mos is right up there.

August 4th, 2010 @5:21 pm
Hi-Tek produced Black on Both Sides, Reflection Eternal, Blackstar, Pharoah Monche’s first record, Hi-Teknology 1 and 2. He’s the beats behind all that early Rawkus stuff. I love his stuff. His first solo record was Teknology Vol 1 and its awesome.
