It does look great! I have an 1980 bike that I’m still slowly converting and I’ll try to style it after yours.
One technical question–if only the bottom portion of the handlebars are taped, why would you put the brake lever at the top of the bars, near the stem? How easy is it to grab the brake if your hands are at the bottom of the bars?
I usually stay at high speeds in the drop position, when I know braking will not be necessary, I’m in the upright position for more casual stop/go riding. Also I like the feel of bare bar for that comfort riding style, and the tape for when I want to get up in speeds quickly and maintain that speed. 2 functions built into one for my style of riding.
All cross lever brakes work as long as the clamp is large enough. Mine’s a very old style found in a old parts bin at the local bike shop. Just polished it up. The newer styled ones have a mountain bike look to them and don’t flow, these fit the contour of my bars perfect.
Whoa. It’s like the sister bike for my Fuji.
-’81 Royale, in grey, but the tall frame 25″/64cm
-SS with the same gear ratio 52/16
-Blue tires (cheap generic brand), blue KMZ chain
-White San Marco saddle
-Soon-to-be brown leather-look bar tape, but I’m seriously considering white to match the saddle. It looks fantastic on your steed in the photos.
Well done.

Good deal! Are there any other types of brake levers that would work with your style handlebars?
